Update on the situation. I've decided to take the plunge and get “creative” for Italian, fishing from ancient Greek for the names I was having troubles with. One of the problem is that some of the names actually exist in Italian, although with slightly different meanings.

Here's the situation as of now, with comments. The translations are still open for debate, so if anyone has comments or suggestions, I'm open.

One of the things I love about is that, despite being conceptually in the / genre, it has a very original and quirky take on it. This also reflects on a number of details down to the level of semantics —and that's where my love turns into hate when I want to translate it.

Here's some examples:

Thrilled that KAIROS, written by Jenny Erpenbeck and translated by Michael Hofman, has won the International Booker Prize. I found this novel so affecting in its weaving together of German history and personal history. https://www.npr.org/2024/05/21/1252680852/kairos-jenny-erpenbeck-2024-international-booker-prize-winner#:~:text='Kairos'%20by%20Jenny%20Erpenbeck%20wins%202024%20International%20Booker%20Prize%20Jenny,undergoes%20its%20own%20political%20transformation.

France to name Dallas publisher a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters 🇫🇷 📚

Browsing eBay and there's an Apple IIe with the description in French:

🇫🇷 "Ordinateur Apple IIe Les condensateurs d'alimentation ont été changés

So I put the text into a translator and got:

🇬🇧 "Computer Apple IIe Food condensers have been changed"

Food condensers? I'm going to presume that's Capacitors 🤣

Kudos to this agency for (finally!) being honest about why can't replace professional :

  1. Mistranslation
  2. Invention of content
  3. Overuse of trending terms
  4. Challenges with proper nouns
  5. Misalignment of register
  6. Exaggeration of style
  7. Misinterpretation of contextual and cultural nuances
  8. Inability to improve clarity
  9. Literal translations
  10. Misinterpretation of mood
  11. Introduction of nonexistent content
  12. Omission of content

Signed up for an event for people looking to join the Brazilian publishing industry as editors/proofreaders. Last year I did a course given by the institution that's hosting this event. We'll take an editing test during the event. I hope I pass; it's a great chance of getting customers.

It offers many courses focused on the Brazilian publishing industry (for translators, editors, writers, literary agents, book publishers, and so on).
