The BBC's experiment with Mastodon is pathbreaking in English-language news -- a major organization setting up its own instance. They've really thought this through. Key language:

"We're using social.bbc as the domain, so you can be sure these accounts are genuinely from the BBC. And by linking to and from the BBC’s website, we have verified our identity on Mastodon."

Really enjoyed speaking with @caos for @gnulinux about my project https://jointhefediverse.net!

"I'd just like to add that it's been a few years since I got excited about innovation in tech. Things like cryptocurrency, NFTs, and now AI, have all been about extracting value and making profit. The fediverse is a breath of fresh air."

Between Twitter and Reddit imploding, and Meta soon launching their fediverse-compatible Project 92/Barcelona/Threads, there's a great need to make https://jointhefediverse.net available in more languages.

Would you join me and the rest of the volunteers and help out?

Od dzisiaj strona https://jointhefediverse.net/ jest dostępna także w wersji polskiej.

Posłuchałem vox populi (61,2% głosujących w ankiecie) i zdecydowałem się ostatecznie na użycie „fediwersum”.

Jeżeli będziecie mieli jakieś uwagi do tłumaczenia, to śmiało. Nie mam z tym za dużego doświadczenia i wskazówki się przydadzą.

This seems very important and worth ongoing study:

“Once again, results suggest a rise in diversity as the 10 biggest server contribution to the Fediverse is reduced by more than 10%. So, even if the biggest servers are accumulating more users, it seems that the Fediverse is becoming more decentralized.”

mathias,

@smallpatatas

Uuhh...now I'm getting lost. Should we block them to avoid them blocking us first?

For me, being here (in the Fediverse) and not posting original posts on the BigTech centralized services, which they can kick me off, moderate or cut me off from my content, was the main reason. I host my own instances. For the (very few) posts I do on a centralized service I have already posted it here (in the Fediverse) OR (more often these days) simply post a link to the Fediverse post in question (often with the tag).

My point is that my goal is still intact, no matter whichever other instance is set up. I still own my content. It can't be taken away from me. As I undisputably post it on a platform I control first it is not theirs, even if my post enriches a post that started off on their platform and they in some way might claim ownership of its content. If they were to decide to block me it goes like with any other block here in the Fediverse = unfortunate but, hey, that is how this place works...and if they do they will definitely not even be able to find a legal loop-hole that allows them to own my content in any way/shape/form.

On the flipside, if a service appears on the Fediverse that my current non-fedi friends thinks "hey, THAT is what I will join!" (despite me having chewed their ears off for months to come here in the first place) and it will mean I get to see their posts here, and to share my posts with them: good for them! Good for me!

In the meantime we (who are already present in the Fediverse) can look at what the new instances are doing, how they are doing it, if they are introducing new challenges/problems, and if those problems means we should adapt something in our existing services here.

Just my £0.02 and highly subjective thoughts.
