My shorthand for the approach we most need in election coberage is this:

"Not the odds, but the stakes."

How does this work in practice? Margaret Sullivan answers that in The Guardian today. "Now’s the time to think about just how bad a DeSantis presidency would be."

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/25/ron-desantis-florida-record-presidential-campaign?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Not how DeSantis plans to outwit Trump and then succeed in "the general" (itself an insidery phrase...) but what life would be like if he took power.

Not the odds, but the stakes.

Over the coming year and a half, Republican talking points will be focused on making you feel unsettled about a President Kamala Harris. They'll play on race, sex, and the "Kamala is a cop" themes to divide Democrats, independents, and lefties. Make up your mind right now not to fall for that bullshit, esp. if you're an independent who likes to think you're not a racist or a sexist.

If you don't want theofascism, you must take the chance on Biden...AND Harris.

TRANSCRIPTS OF KISSINGER’S CALLS REVEAL HIS CULPABILITY

They expose Nixon’s policymaking, Kissinger’s key role, & how so many Cambodians came to be killed by U.S. aircraft.

“The whole goddamn Air Force over there farting around doing nothing,” Nixon barked at Henry Kissinger during a phone call on December 9, 1970.

He called for a huge increase in attacks in Cambodia. “I want it done!! Get them off their ass and get them to work now.”

THAT TIME JOE BIDEN WAS BANNED FROM NEGOTIATING WITH REPUBLICANS

Biden negotiating a debt ceiling with Kevin McCarthy was Harry Reid’s worst nightmare

After the last time Biden, as Vice President, entered such negotiations, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid ordered the White House to NEVER send him down again.

Biden did such a bad job that he got a worse deal out of Mitch McConnell than McConnell had already agreed to give Reid.

Trans People Are Avoiding Whole U.S. States to Stay Safe

“I wouldn’t even try to get a motel in rural America right now,” said one trans woman,

as GOP politicians & rightwing media stoke suspicion, fear, & hatred against LGBTQ people

GOP politicians have introduced more than 500 anti-trans bills just this year, incl bans on gender-affirming care & drag shows & bathrooms bills prohibiting trans ppl using washrooms corresponding to their gender

When news broke that Ron would announce a run for this week, I went through what he and R’s have done in . What I found was more disturbing than I anticipated.

He represents the antithesis of liberty. Voting for him is casting a vote for division. It might be a vote for fascism in the US. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers from this country gave their lives to fight against.

It's very frustrating to recall that the Dems had an opportunity to raise the during the lame-duck but a few rejected the idea and Biden didn't push it in part because his people thought they could "win" a hostage standoff.

    barney,

That's false. The Dems did not have an opportunity to raise the during the lame-duck period. A debt limit bill can be filibustered just like any other bill.

Just as with the ACA, Republicans keep moving the goalposts. They don't want a deal, because they want a default and a tanked economy to help them in 2024. Enough of this extortion. It's time to have a Constitutional fight over the debt ceiling.

When you can buy any gun you want at the store next door and go kill a bunch of kids in their school, but kids cannot read a poem in a book because one single person would find it had "indirectly hate messages", then you know that you live in a sick political system.

Worse, you know there isn't ANY other civilized society where such a thing can happen.

Remember when people here used to their posts on the latest atrocities so that on days when your entire ability to absorb horror and violence and racism and homophobia and transphobia and 37 other forms of injustice has already been consumed and you are fully into outrage fatigue, you could just STOP the onslaught and start fresh tomorrow?

Pepperidge Farm remembers. And Pepperidge Farm would really like it if people would re-adopt that norm, but since that's clearly not happening, a couple of Brussels®️ and a scoop of ice cream will have to do.
