People of Mastodon!

I'm researching the growth of ebikes ...

... in cities around the US

I've talked to many people who love them!

But also want to include the perspective of folks who have concerns ...

... i.e. about the speed and weight of ebikes in accidents with pedestrians or other cyclists, and the like

If anyone has thoughts they wanna share, ping me! I'm all ears: clive@clivethompson.net

Pass this along if you know anyone else with perspective they want to share

@clive

There's a DIY ebike group on Facebook where a large percentage of the members aim to build bikes bigger and faster than legally permitted.

I should probably avoid using references like "Rodney Dangerfield" here, since most readers would probably say, "Rodney WHO"? -- which of course would support his claim that he never got any respect.

@lauren he's the first one I think of when someone mentions a Rodney.

the wto protests were a turning point for me as a college student, that's when i learned that the news media can lie, and that militarized police are the ones who overwhelmingly initiate fear and perpetrate the violence accredited to protestors on the evening news. i guess a new generation of college students is learning about this now, probably the most important thing they'll learn on their campuses in 4 years tbh

@seachanger I wonder if the current protesting students will be supporting the universities once they are alumni in the future.

New @Vivaldi release. Plenty of good stuff in here. The Feed Reader got special attention this time.

When you go to a page that provides a feed, you can click the feed reader icon in the address bar to follow it.

You can follow news sites and blogs, but did you know that you can follow Youtube channels as well?

With this update, you can now follow subreddits and users on Reddit, as well as repository releases and commits on GitHub.

Enjoy!

This month it is 30 years since I started working on browsers. April 1994 is when Geir and I started working on the Opera browser. We founded the company a year later.

Initially I made the UI, while Geir did a lot of the core.

Since that time I have dedicated myself to making the Web live up to its potential. First at Opera and now at Vivaldi.

If you ever used Opera and you have not tried Vivaldi, I invite you to give us a try!

If you never used Opera or Vivaldi, you are invited as well!

Matt Blaze, a respected computer scientist whom I've known pretty much forever, just told me to "Fck off" (without the '') and blocked me here on .

I think you may find the reason why interesting.

While I have frequently stood up for him when he's the subject of unfair comments of one sort of another, I still call issues as I see them.

Earlier today, without any prompting, Matt noted here that he just cancelled a bunch of reservations he'd made to help assure he could get a "cloud free" viewing experience of the eclipse.

In response to my comment that this seemed to be rather obnoxious behavior, given how tightly rooms have been booked, he suggested that people could just use the reservations now. I noted that not everyone can do last minute planning and sometimes it takes weeks for many to plan such trips.

He "apologized" for not meeting my "personal standards". I noted that I felt they were pretty basic standards and wondered how many reservations he had made.

At that point, he threw the invective and blocked me.

What's interesting here is that Matt openly made a point of publicly saying he had made multiple reservations only to cancel all but one. Why he made that post in the first place I can't imagine.

But I stand by my analysis of that post.

Just wanted you to know why I apparently won't be interacting with Matt any more here on Mastodon at least.

I welcome alternative points of view regarding this dialogue.

    Best, -L

If the Kroger-Albertsons merger goes through, that combined company + Walmart would control 70% of the grocery market in over 160 cities.

Think grocery prices are bad now?

Without competition, it would be a price gouging free-for-all.

This is why the FTC is suing to stop it.

Well, this is a transcendent level of evil: Facebook bought a VPN company and deployed it, in part, to spy on its competitor's users.

    https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/26/facebook-secret-project-snooped-snapchat-user-traffic/

It's a reminder that VPNs have their own risks, beyond technical ones if operated incompetently -- namely, that you have to trust the VPN company itself.

UPDATED to reflect which users were being spied on.

I’ll let you in on a secret: I love sporadically updated weblogs. I subscribe to over 1200 feeds and most of them are sporadic or even technically “inactive”. Months often pass between updates

It means that every post published was important to the writer

Back in the days of snail mail, letters that began with “It’s been a while since I last wrote to you” were the ones people cherished the most

You don’t need to post every day or even every week to have a blog that matters
