I love Anne Lamott’s writing so I wanted to share an article on aging she wrote for the WaPo. I am going to borrow the phrase “crazy optimist.” (Gift article)

Taking down tents - whether of student protesters or the homeless - does nothing to address the underlying issue. (Gift link)

jackiegardina,
@jackiegardina@awscommunity.social avatar

@RememberUsAlways It’s true that there are limits on free speech and that universities’ can enforce those limits. I had a different reaction to the article - quashing the protest, does not quash the underlying problem. In the 1980s, college students built shantytowns to protest apartheid in South Africa. This isn’t new. Yet the reaction is.

@RememberUsAlways I don’t think anyone is “allowing” a terrorist organization to take hostages. But I do think people are struggling with punishing Hamas, the terrorist organization, and punishing Palestinian civilians. There are Geneva Convention Rules regarding their lives as well. We need to be able to do both.

jackiegardina,
@jackiegardina@awscommunity.social avatar

@RememberUsAlways There is no doubt that Israel has a right to respond, the question we are grappling with is what are the limits to that response.I think history will be the judge of whether Israel has engaged in the “indiscriminate or deliberate attack on civilian and civilian objects” or allowed humanitarian aid organizations to freely offer support. The broad powers to rescue hostages does not supplant protections for civilians.

I appreciation your insights and thoughtfulness.

This line - although written in jest - pretty much sums up the GOP playbook.

“We really saw this as an opportunity to grab the senseless-dog-execution demographic, and maybe even make some inroads with independent sociopaths and future serial killers. We just didn’t see the blowback coming.”

What I learned at SOCTUS this week.

We should be very concerned about the dangers of prosecutorial overreach when it comes to former presidents alleged criminal conduct while in office.

We should NOT be considered at all about the dangers of prosecutorial overreach when it comes to doctors who perform lifesaving abortions in Idaho.

Got it.

I am puzzled by the breathless coverage of campus protests. They are not new, or even different. In the 1980s, when I was in college, students built a shanty town on the quad to protest apartheid in South Africa. In the 1960s and 70s, it was the Vietnam War and civil rights protests. These are the conversations we have been having for decades.

Remember Gary Hart and how an alleged affair derailed his presidency? Seems quaint now, doesn't it?

My favorite line: "the real story was bigger than just one affair—it was about Hart’s fundamental character, and whether a man like him should be president."

This seems so obvious I am surprised it needs to be written in a brief to the Supreme Court of the United States. But here we are.

“The President’s constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed does not entail a general right to violate them.”

The state of abortion rights in the U.S. unequivocally demonstrates that women are second class citizens. All the orange and tan states deny women autonomy over their own bodies, the most basic element of liberty. The federal government permits this. I’m angry and heavy-hearted.

jackiegardina,
@jackiegardina@awscommunity.social avatar

@heidilifeldman It's not about women's rights, it's about states' rights. Big misunderstanding, 😐 Let's pass the ERA so we don't have to debate this issue any longer.

I want you to compare how those involved in the false electors scheme are being treated compared to the men and women who mistakenly voted in FL, often after the state approved their voter registration.

Two-tiered system of justice indeed.

Until the NCAA recognized women’s basketball as a legitimate sport, Iowa high school girl’s basketball still played half court 3 on 3 basketball. In 1982, it switched to full court 5 on 5 so high school graduates could compete at the college level. 40 years later, Caitlin Clark is shining a light on that history.

SCOTUS accelerated President Nixon's resignation with its decision in US. v. Nixon - which it took on direct appeal from the district court.

SCOTUS is delaying President Trump's trial after rejecting Jack Smith's certiorari petition directly from the district court, requiring an appellate decision, sitting on the stay for 2 weeks, and then deciding to hear the case in 2 months.

What a f***ing mess.
