This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

@RickiTarr I had a friend who had to learn how to smell. She was hit by a car and got a head injury, losing her sense of smell and taste. After a couple of years, she began experiencing them in musical terms (she was a pianist) e.g. Chocolate was bluesy. After another couple of years of this synesthesia, she didn't even notice it, she just tasted and smelled as before.

It's so weird that we are all supposed to be ashamed for burping and farting. I deeply apologize to everyone for keeping my body from literally exploding, so uncouth.

jhavok,

@RickiTarr I've gone the other way. Farts are celebrated with a triumphant cry (mine or anyone else's), burps are extended as long as possible though I never think to say something with them until it's too late .

It's strange to me when I see people get upset about people doing good deeds, and posting it online.

"They're just doing it for attention!"

Yeah, so what? I'd much rather see people doing nice things for attention, than the people who do mean pranks or wasting food. A good deed is still good, even if it's done for the wrong reasons.

My brother and I were driving through this small decaying town called Barnett, Mo, and we passed this old mill that looked very old, and grown over. It was covered with cool old signage, and looked really interesting, but there were 5 older people sitting in front of it by a table, and a hand painted sign that says Toxic Club. So, we drive back around, because we had to know, so we pull in, and ask "What is the Toxic Club?", and they say they are just out there most days with coffee and donuts to make sure that people get something to eat, and drink and have someone to chat with. That doesn't sound toxic at all, it sounds lovely.

@Pineywoozle @RickiTarr My wife and I did a drive from DC to Niagara Falls and back using an early GPS. We set it so it just pointed at Niagara and then took whatever road was closest to the arrow when we had a choice. We stumbled on the remnants of her mother's home town purely by accident, nothing but a post office, a general store and a huge equipment shed for the mine.

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr A month or so ago my wife and I skirted the western border of our state, staying as close as possible without crossing it for a few hours until we had to pee and headed back to civilization. Caught some cute little unpaved roads along the way.

@Saltssaltgirl I'm lucky, my wife will usually talk about getting a haircut for a few days before she gets one, so it doesnt sneak up on me.

@Saltssaltgirl I would notice them instantly. No, you can't ask her.

I went all winter without shaving and developed quite a beard. Early in spring I shaved it off. Several days later she asked "did you do something with your hair???"

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

@RickiTarr We lived in a small rural town, and my mother raised us with benign neglect. My best friend and I would romp around without restrictions until a cop would see us and take us home. We got very sharp at spotting the police before they saw us, and did some amazing things to avoid them, like jumping down from the sidewalk into a yard that was set more than head-high below the grade.

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr When I was 4ish (pretty sure it was before kindergarten) I went for a walk one day. I came to a house that I recognized as belonging to my mother's friend. She burst out the door, hustled me inside, and called my mother to come fetch me. I had no idea what the fuss was about, as I knew exactly where I was and how to get back home, I just wasn't done walking yet.

Looked at the area in Google maps and I'm pretty sure I found the house. It's a bit over a mile from where we lived.

Really important article here about how big oil companies, including ExxonMobil, knew plastic recycling was BS since the'70s, but kept pushing the lie anyway.

"New research by the Center for Climate Integrity reveals that the plastics industry knew this plastic waste crisis was coming. And so petrochemical manufacturers worked hard to persuade the public that we could recycle our way out of the problem."

https://thehill.com/opinion/energy-environment/4513908-big-oils-big-deception-that-plastics-are-recyclable/

This is in addition to them knowing about the dangers of carbon emissions since the 1970s, and deliberately delaying action: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/exxon-knew-about-climate-change-almost-40-years-ago/

(Worth noting the plastic used in the synthetic rubber in tyres is a major source of plastic pollution: https://aus.social/@ajsadauskas/112009009421402914)

"Twenty petrochemical companies generate more than half of all the world’s single-use plastics. They include major oil and gas companies such as ExxonMobil, the world’s leading producer of single-use plastic waste.

...

"Behind the scenes, however, they were admitting all along that such efforts were “virtually hopeless.” For more than 40 years, they knew that plastic recycling is not technically or economically feasible at scale. More than 90 percent of all plastic has ended up in landfills, ecosystems, or incinerators.

...

"Since the 1970s, these companies, their trade associations, and their front groups promoted recycling “solutions” using misleading advertising, inaccurate educational materials, performative investments, and commitments that they knew they were unlikely to meet.

...

"Internal documents reveal that the industry knew by 1986, for example, that “recycling cannot be considered a permanent solid waste solution [to plastics], as it merely prolongs the time until an item is disposed of.” In 1994, an Exxon employee warned staffers at the American Plastics Council that they did not “want paper floating around” saying they could not meet recycling goals, since the issue was “highly sensitive politically.” These compelling admissions and many more are grounds for a thorough investigation.

...

"Plastics are a product made from fossil fuels. As the world moves away from fossil fuels in a race to avert climate catastrophe, journalists have shined a light on how oil companies promote recycling, in part because plastics are their 'Plan B.'"

https://thehill.com/opinion/energy-environment/4513908-big-oils-big-deception-that-plastics-are-recyclable/

These days, the CEO of ExxonMobil likes to gaslight the public and blame activists:

"Frankly, society, and the activist—the dominant voice in this discussion—has tried to exclude the industry that has the most capacity and the highest potential for helping with some of the technologies."

https://aus.social/@ajsadauskas/112009009421402914

Well, these same companies knew about the problems with toxic fossil fuel pollution since the 1970s. That's both greenhouse gas and microplastic pollution.

And they deliberately and knowingly lied to delay action.

Never buy movies or TV shows on a Sony platform.

Or better yet, if you want to actually buy something, make sure it’s in a physical format so that Sony can’t take it away from you.

We've been running two fans in the bedroom due to the heat, and as long as both of them are on, I hear phantom music that sounds like a barely audible radio outside the window. I can tell the genre of the music, but can't pick out a tune or words. I've heard country western, male choral, blues, Van Halen, '70s classic rock...the other night with the classic rock I could very faintly hear the solos, first time any melodic content was audible.

It's a pleasant way to fall asleep.
