One of my favorite 10 minutes interactions in the @fediforum , was the one with @n00q regarding how he was able to have a working fediverse instance for his friends IRL.

The learning lessons there made me believe there is room for communities-driven instances for home-brewing, HOAs, universities, hobbyists, etc. I know some of these exists, but the kind of guerrilla marketing used in the n00q one was interesting.

I even believe there is a business model to pursue there.

We started this account less than 6 months ago. It's going pretty well โ€“ thanks to you: 4.2k followers, lots of interactions, questions, and comments. ๐ŸŽ‰

A couple of weeks ago, the European Broadcasting Union () asked us to write a guest article about our experience with / the , explain the basics, and point out the advantages. :mastodon:

Challenge accepted. ๐Ÿ‘

So here's the finished post by @lxplm, hot off the press. โŒจ๏ธ

Alright, I've finished tidying up this little guy. If anyone wants to take an early look, here's the link:

https://github.com/mahomedalid/static-activitypub-blog-template

I'll be recording something tomorrow and adding a video there. The purpose is to make it easier for end users. I managed to get end-to-end functionality working in about 15 minutes.

So, no tags, I really want to have an easy first impression for new users.

Letโ€™s be honest, if youโ€™re a software engineer, you know where all this compute and power consumption is going. While itโ€™s popular to blame , yโ€™all know how much is wasted on , microservices, overscaled , spark/databricks and other unnecessary big data tech. Itโ€™s long past time weโ€™re honest with the public about how much our practices are hurting the climate, and stop looking for scapegoats https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/the-staggering-ecological-impacts-of-computation-and-the-cloud/

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh I recently was in an experimental facility for data center design on one of the biggest cloud providers. They basically have functional prototypes to not need air cooling, but liquid cooling, and reuse the heat produced by the CPUs for the heating needs of the buildings, allowing reduce great qtys of necessary energy.

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh You can easily warm your garage with those devices.

Keeping things simple helps me to focus my time and resources. One of such features is the "Subscribe" modal on my site.

This is a quick note about how you can implement it too:

Hear me out, enabled games. If you developed a game, and are looking to add a social network experience to it, ping me, would be a fun project to work on.

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@darth well, yes, that requires exploration based on the goals game. But Activity pub is simply the publication of "activities" or events, so it could be as simple as login with your fediverse account, autopublishing a score into a post, or when you get a badge or a level complete (including media).

You could also have the game accounts that publish a score leaderboard per day/month/etc., tagging accounts and updating it whenever changes.

All these actions could gain new users.

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@darth I may lack imagination, that is why I am only offering dev skills, I never suggested to implement the protocol but use it to add social experience, but now I am intrigued, what it is in your mind?

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@darth I am just listening to by @mike ans @J12t brings the interesting example of farmville and .

I do remember playing the farm sim game, now imagine all the social interactions inside the game happened because and/or through .

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@darth @mike @J12t I get what you say, but I think the value of ActivityPub is the community behind and not the technology itself. Yes, you could use WebXDC, AT bluesky proto, Nostr or Blockchain-like, but none offer the open social community of the Fediverse.

Iโ€™ve often described LinkedIn as a collection of growth hacks as opposed to a coherent product and their latest plans strengthen that impression.

LinkedIn is working on adding puzzle games to its app.

My neighbor is flying to #Sweden from #Texas to get some dental work done. The dentist is a relative.

My neighbor is also picking up a new iPhone for them as a thank-you gift (again, they're a relative).

Do the math. Airfare to Sweden plus an iPhone plus the actual cost of the procedure (cash) is less than getting it done in the U.S.

What the frick.

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@RL_Dane I have a friend in the US and her mom traveled back to Ukraine for the same reason. A travel that takes a few days, because you need to get there by train from Poland. Back to a country in war because dental work is not affordable here. Let that sink in.

sass, to nba
@sass@mastodon.social avatar

Idea: It'd be cool if there was a post type that was only visible to those who follow a certain hashtag. Like if you wanted to live-toot an NBA game you could tag it with (for example) and only others who follow it will be notified.

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@sass is not that how following hashtags work?

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@sass oh! I got it, then maybe what we need is "mute" tags, even temprorarily. Usually sports event are in the format as . Is that a thing @FediTips ? Mute tags?

Hey folks, I'm writing a piece for @fumacapt on why RSS matters and why it's cool.

Can you share your personal perspective, resources you go back to, clients for different platforms?

That would be ace.

It's going to be out next week, and it's in Portuguese.

mapache,

@john_fisherman @fumacapt I am working in a blog post series about bringing a static site to the fediverse, and one core element is a util I created to convert from RSS to ActivityPub outbox - https://maho.dev/2024/02/a-guide-to-implementing-activitypub-in-a-static-site-or-any-website-part-4/

Last night I came up with (and implemented!) an idea for a mastodon client that automatically curates my feed by categorizing toots. It's just idea phase right now, but I wrote about the process here https://timkellogg.me/blog/2023/12/19/fossil

mapache,
@mapache@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh this is exactly the idea I had in mind. I actually implemented inside @raccoonbits (https://github.com/mahomedalid/raccoonbits)
but did not release the embeddings version.

Now I am trying to bring that timeline to a fork of @phanpy https://phanpy.social/

So if you are interested I would be happy to join efforts!
