#offtopic I'm trying to debug an issue in my code at work, and my brain is just not helping.
It is like trying to solve a crime using these boards on the wall full of pictures, newspaper clippings, and post-it notes, all linked by red string. But the pins are 1/4 mm long, so when I pull from the thread to link another clipping to the case, two pins fall down, the string and the clippings they were holding go along with them, and the cat keeps playing with everything that falls to the floor.
Andrew Roberts: Churchill: Walking with Destiny (Churchill. Krocząc z przeznaczeniem)
Nie da się ukryć, że Roberts lubi, a właściwie podziwia swojego bohatera, więc rozumiem, że może wywoływać zastrzeżenia. Moim zdaniem jednak podchodzi do Churchilla obiektywnie. Przynajmniej na tyle, na ile to możliwe.
Help: A lot via the Mobian Ports ( #mobian-ports:matrix.org ) Matrix room and the postmarketOS offtopic ( #offtopic:postmarketos.org ) Matrix room.
Sources: Not much there yet. As soon as there are official builds for the Pixel 3a, I will start writing docs. I already have a lot of notes on what I had to do. But first I need to have someone merge the Kernel patches, as I don’t know C, which makes resolving merge conflicts really hard, it turns out. Once that is done, there are just a few smaller merge requests left and builds will appear magically.
The whole process is not that difficult if there are already Kernel patches available. In the case of the Pixel 3a, I only had to clone the sdm670-mainline repo ( gitlab.com/sdm670-mainline/linux-patches ) , compile the kernel (two commands) and get a .deb, which I used with mobian-recipes ( salsa.debian.org/Mobian-team/mobian-recipes/ ) to build an image. I then wrote a config file for droid-juicer ( gitlab.com/mobian1/droid-juicer/-/…/4 ) which tells it what files on the vendor and modem partitions it should get, then those are copied to /usr/lib/firmware/updates/.
That was easy as dmesg will just tell you what files it cannot load because they are missing. Just find those, write the config, run droid-juicer, reboot… boom. Display, Wifi, LTE and so on working.
Then smaller stuff like udev rules for vibration and an initramfs hook ( salsa.debian.org/…/qcom-firmware?ref_type=heads ) so that firmware files get integrated into initramfs and components start to work early during boot.
The most difficult part would be merging the Kernel patches with other patches and resoving the merge conflicts… At least to me, as I don’t know C.
If there are no mainlining efforts for a phone yet, then I don’t know what to do, as that requires a Kernel dev.
That’s all not that hard, my main difficulty was finding out what to do. Everything I did so far would be an afternoon of work, if I had just found the necessary information much quicker. Instead I spent two weeks, of which 95 % was finding info, lol.
Just join the Mobian Matrix room, we should be able to help you, even though I know far less than the others there…so far. :p
I do hope that’s helpful and I’ll happily try to answer more questions. :)
An obsession of mine is researching how countries handle threats of #food & #water insecurity.
#Germany for example, has secret locations in which it stores legumes, grains & milk powder.
#Finland has 6 mths of grain & fuel & a min. of 3 months of medicine.
In terms of water security, 9 countries in the #MiddleEast will have extreme lvls of water stress by 2040.
But this will also be dire for #Australia, #USA#China & #India.
I'll be traveling to the US and Canada in summer 2024 for 2 months, but I will not be on "vacation" from work. I need a solid wifi connection wherever I go.
We'll be visiting some fairly remote areas where cell coverage is spotty at best (the Kootenays, rural Ontario, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan). How in the world can I guarantee a wifi connection in my travels?
Ok, first attempt at using #Matrix (The software, not the virtual world, nor the development concept), without doing the research first.
The official default server seems to be only used by official devs of apps, while the rest of channels are mostly empty. Guess I need to check for other servers / networks.
And about #IRC ... My old network is no more. So dunno. Quakenet, Efnet, rizon? I'm feeling so lost now. Curse the day in 2000 when we began migrating to MSN Messenger
@lonelyautomata matrix.org is where most users are at, given its effective default status. It's a bit difficult to find active rooms (because the room directory is sorted by member count which, as it includes bridge puppets, is not indicative of the room's activity. Also matrix.org doesn't really moderate their directory). Anyways, there are some active tech-related rooms, not much for other topics. https://matrix.to/#/#offtopic-space:envs.net contains some off-topic rooms.
Heatwaves involve a chunk of extra energy arriving where it's not wanted/expected. But it is energy. Is anyone talking about extracting and using that energy to feed into the grid (and perhaps cool the surroundings down a bit)? Obviously it's technically "only" a few degrees so hard to run a heat engine off it, but has anyone heard of any actual work to turn it into electricity? #climate#heatwaves#energy
@helenczerski CW: #conspiracy#offtopic ()
IIRC
everyone who has ever built a working system for (very) cheap, sustainable, abundant energy…
…
has wound up being killed by oil execs.
and then
they & their work is buried / written out of history.
Nothing crazy here
Just greedy business-as-usual.
Remember the early lightbulbs last TOO long,
so they had to make… planned obsolescence.
What are the foundational principles of #neuroscience? By which I mean: beliefs or assumptions that animate our study of the brain across topics. Things like a belief in a structure-function relationship or the neuron as the base unit.
@karihoffman yeah #degeneracy seems to be ubiquitous and in my PhD lab we started doing lots of sensitivity analyses after the papers from Eve's lab came out like this one -- Similar network activity from disparate circuit parameters and then we did a lot of background research on where the ideas came from for neuroscience. That's how we came across the 2 papers I cited earlier.
side note and a bit #offtopic -- 2 members wrote a big review on degeneracy and my contributions were only mentioned in the acknowledgment section 😢 I was a grad student at the time and didn't know any better and still struggle with who should get acknowledgement vs authorship. Kinda sad how academia doesn't follow some community-approved norm for giving scientists credit -- see my poll here https://neuromatch.social/@manisha/110556283019459141 -- still struggling with how to approach that topic with the PI as that was one of the many reasons why I am no longer an active academic but trying to change how #academia and #science work -- starting with our very own neuromatch.social -- we have lots of things planned and all instance members are welcome to join us in changing how we do and communicate science #neuromatchstodon@academicchatter
@Neurograce if you use this discussion to guide future talks/research, I would be very grateful if you cite the discussion thread. I know that's not how things are done traditionally but who says we can't change traditions? This way we can all start working as a community of scientists collaborating together and giving ample credit to each other rather than competing against each other :)
#OffTopic For a dynamic website with a database, is #php + #MariaDB still the best/most recommended combination, or are there lighter options, such as #javascript + DB (json?)?
Got Mobian (almost) ported to Pixel 3a / 3a XL (lemmy.sdf.org)
Most parts work, still not sure why Bluetooth gives me errors in dmesg, audio out works, microphone input not yet… I’m getting there....
Is there a community like /r/legaladvice or /r/legaladviceofftopic?
I'm looking for a community like /r/legaladvice or /r/legaladviceofftopic from Reddit.
