Some interesting new photos of Colossus have just been released.

GCHQ has released never before seen images of Colossus, the UK's secret code breaking computer credited with helping the Allies win World War Two.

The intelligence agency is publishing them to mark the 80th anniversary of the device's invention.

They should be sanitising their database inputs rather than change the input data!

For those who are new here and miss tweetdeck, you can get the same in Mastodon - just go into settings and enable the Advanced UI - you will then get a multiple column customizable view

An end of an era?

The Z80 product line, specifically the Z84C00 is being end of life after 48 years of production.

As usual for Zilog, nothing on their website.

This I got from the RMC discord but I did see this earlier today elsewhere

Til Zilog developed its own operating system, in the form of the comprehensively titled Z80 Operating System with Relocatable Modules and I/O Management (Z80-RIO for short)

On this day (1977 Aug 3), 46 years ago, the Tandy TRS-80 was released

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS-80

"The TRS-80 Micro Computer System (TRS-80, later renamed the Model I to distinguish it from successors) is a desktop microcomputer launched in 1977 and sold by Tandy Corporation through their Radio Shack stores. The name is an abbreviation of Tandy Radio Shack, Z80"

This morning PayPal moved all UK customers over from PayPal (Europe) to PayPal UK Ltd.

In doing so, it seems that all Direct Debit mandates and Debit Card's need to be reconfirmed due to the transfer.

So if you use PayPal and you find payments failing, then that's likely the cause.

I had it cause some Patreon payments fail this morning & took a while to figure out it was PayPal's fault

Another unusual find on an eBay search

RADIO SHACK TRS-80 PT-210 Portable DATA TERMINAL Acoustic Coupler from 1982

Now I've never seen a TRS-80 with a built in printer before, let alone the acoustic coupler in the lid

This is a retro machine I've never seen before.

Apparently it's a luggable Macintosh Plus from 1986

Spotted it whilst browsing eBay

This sounds dodgy to me...

Crooked house pub:

  • Closed after burglary in June when interior trashed
  • Burned down Saturday night, fire crews appeared to be hampered by the lane blocked with mounds of earth
  • Monday demolished

The latter happening so soon afterwards - if the scene was still being investigated for the cause then wtf?

Some blank 5.25" floppy disks just arrived in the post.

Most are unlabeled & look to be blank. Some have labels & printouts of contents.

However there's a few cover disks including one for OS/2.

Also 2 for the TRS-80 and one labelled Z280 C compiler demo disk

It's the Prism VTX5000 modem for the 16k & 48k Spectrum, along with the Micronet 800 & Prestel customer handbooks

Pic is with one of my 48K's sitting on top of it for comparison

Today is the 20th birthday of ESA's Mars Express so from 17:00 BST (under an hour from now) they are going to have a "live feed" from one of the onboard cameras - at 1 frame every 50 seconds!

“This is an old camera, originally planned for engineering purposes, at a distance of almost three million kilometres from Earth – this hasn’t been tried before and to be honest, we’re not 100% certain it’ll work,”

Browsing eBay and there's an Apple IIe with the description in French:

🇫🇷 "Ordinateur Apple IIe Les condensateurs d'alimentation ont été changés

So I put the text into a translator and got:

🇬🇧 "Computer Apple IIe Food condensers have been changed"

Food condensers? I'm going to presume that's Capacitors 🤣

Remember the petition about "Require videogame publishers to keep games they have sold in a working state" & the response saying "Those selling games must comply with UK consumer law. They must provide clear information and allow continued access to games if sold on the understanding that they will remain playable indefinitely."

Well the Petitions Committee has stepped in and say it did not respond directly to the petitiion request
