Traditional Publishing for Writers

weirdwriter,

I am honestly glad publishers are catching on that having their own centralized websites that people visit instead of a platform will get them more readers. @NathanZimriBorgman @pluralistic "forcing me into bankruptcy won’t actually get you the money you need to settle a big claim — it’ll just ruin my life"

This behaviour is intentional and premeditated, and not merely lawyers "eliminating liability": it is engineered to create a hostile environment which instills fear and subservience to make independent contractors afraid to exercise any of their legal rights. It's designed to turn craftspeople into serfs.

weirdwriter,

Is it just me, or is self/indie publishing having it's midlife crisis tech bro moment? https://robertkingett.com/posts/6564/ @bookstodon

Rhube,

@weirdwriter @bookstodon that's not how I would put it. I would say that indie publishing is being buried by grifters churning out millions of stolen words, so that it's harder to find genuine indie books.

So-called 'generative-AI' isn't indie publishing - it's scam artists stealing from indie publishers, writers, and artists.

weirdwriter,

I actually fully agree with you! I love most indie work, like, genuine indie work! It started with that whole viral nobody buys books anymore and that's a side of indie publishing I'd rather never touch again! I do love buying from indie bookstores, online and offline, because that's how I find some really amazing works! @Rhube @bookstodon

Me at the start of my Kickstarter, vs Me at the end of my Kickstarter.

Well that was a ride. I didn't anticipate being hospitalised halfway through my campaign, but we're funded and I'll have my first book available through Ingram Spark for everyone in June/July.

Writing is easy compared to publishing.

I'm sure it will be worth the effort - looking forward to reading it!

‘We need to slow down scientific publishing’

weirdwriter,

I bookmarked this article that basically asks, what are we paying trad pub for? While I do have an agent, an amazing one, actually! I'll be with this agent until he retires, no author should ever, ever, ever! Make a mood board of your submission! Your agent is your mood board! This would be a fantastic time for a non-discriminatory publishing cooperative to form right now. I know about Book view Cafe but they don't want blind writers like me or other blind writers. I hate self publishing. Seriously, I can't express how much I detest the self publishing process. Just because I have an agent, though, publishing is rough right now! This would be an excellent time for an indie publisher to rise up and not end up on Writer Beware. https://www.lilithsaintcrow.com/2024/04/we-gotta-talk-about-publishing/

Ten Minnesota #newspapers, some in operation for more than 140 years, are ceasing publication in April.

All are owned by Alden Global Capital, which has been accused of "vulture" #capitalism by "taking over legacy newspapers and making drastic cuts, reducing #publishing frequency and slashing #newsroom jobs in an effort to boost profit margins."

think it’s a very good idea for @Flipboard power curators and publishers to think about branding themselves alongside their magazines so they have a profile that is unique to them. So I am testing out branding concepts for my magazines.

@salvomic @Flipboard I noticed a few people like @VictorMoruzzi , has a branded account with the word “happiness” and I think it distinguishes him
