I am old fashioned in that I genuinely like client applications, which is why I tried 18 #Mastodon apps on Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. These were the best ones.
I won't claim that my impressions are comprehensive. I didn't use these apps for weeks on end, so there will certainly be quirks and caveats that I missed.
@maxeddy Solid review I think on all. Only big missing one was @MonaApp and I think @elk likely deserved a mention even though it was not a native mobile app.
@maxeddy Simply because it has not yet been mentioned: I’m using @IceCubesApp for a while now and quite like it. It’s free, open source and does a great job at what it’s supposed to do: let me browse mastodon and interact with other people on it 👍
@jeff@maxeddy Here for Mona, too. The ability to keep your place across devices made it an instant purchase and the dividers may not quite be my Tweetdeck columns, but they’re close enough.
@maxeddy@Ronnie Max, when you do, make sure you ask Ronnie for links to all the custom themes. They’re amazing and part of what got me to switch to Mona.
@maxeddy IDK, I migrated from #Tusky to #Tooot and tooot seems so much better - it pulls likes and comments across instances, interface has a much better usability, and (often) it even detects links to posts and embed them directly below.
Why choose Tusky?
@MarcinW I like Tooot a lot and looked at it on a couple platforms! It's very stylish and had most of the features I was looking for. Ultimately I felt that Tusky just did more and did it better, but Tooot was in the running right until the end.
@maxeddy I'm surprised Ice Cubes didn't get a call out (I saw it in your also-ran list), nor @MonaApp or Elk, which is my favorite web client: https://elk.zone/
@chrismessina@MonaApp I'm definitely going to have to give Mona a look for a future update. The people behind Elk seemed emphatic that it wasn't ready, and I wanted to respect that. Ice Cubes is great but I think Ivory has more polish, and Mammoth being free and having its own instance for new users tipped it over the edge.
