Why do you like Mastodon (or any open source Fediverse app of your choosing) the most? (You can choose multiple choices)

Boosts appreciated for reach.

@rolle

The Fediverse is social media by the people, for the people, and of the people.

A BlueSky / Threads poll might be interesting like this one:

But with Threads and BlueSky.
Even if we can simply read BlueSky here with https://rss-parrot.net

@rolle

Pretty much most of these.

But also, I get a lot more interaction on Mastodon, and it's genuine, not from bots spamming my posts. Despite its number, posting to Twitter is talking to a void, with most of my posts there going entirely unresponded to despite the use of tags and asking specific questions.

And in general, the atmosphere / vibe is better on Masto.

edyssee,
@edyssee@literatur.social avatar

@rolle Because I feel people in the fediverse seem to be interested in each other and real conversation instead of yelling at each other (at least most of the time, the occasional exception proving the rule)

@MountainWizard@metalhead.club avatar

@rolle this might go into the "No commercial algorithms" but the feed has an end. All other social media wants to keep you on the platform. Mastodon doesn't show you things you might find interesting. It just shows the posts from yesterday you've already seen if you scroll far enough. Then you get bored an do something else. It a great way to don't get lost in the feed.

"Something else": It will be developed further. For users, not money-hungry bosses.

thatandromeda,
@thatandromeda@ohai.social avatar

@rolle I actually don’t like it the most (I am having more fun on bluesky) and I think this post points to why: a lot of things about tech and principles, nothing about people and relationships and culture.

thatandromeda,
@thatandromeda@ohai.social avatar

@linc @rolle you might be surprised at how many of these I am already following ;)

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@thatandromeda I'm not, they're great! If you know more I'm all ears. 🙃

thatandromeda,
@thatandromeda@ohai.social avatar

@linc @rolle but this is also not honestly my point; it’s not that I can’t find people who talk about culture, but that when people talk about what mastodon is FOR, they’re often not talking about the things I value most in a social network.

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@thatandromeda Oh, I see. That feels like a byproduct of the smaller slice of early adopters that came here from Twitter (and earlier). If you can't discern the tech & principles difference, there's little reason to not just join whatever the next BigCo tech venture is. However, my hope is that because the folks who deeply care about that will be cemented here, over time the gravity will pull in the rest of the people and culture as long as we continue to focus on making it a welcoming space.

thatandromeda,
@thatandromeda@ohai.social avatar

@linc I can discern it; I just don’t care very much. IMO the killer app has always been people. There are a lot of cool people here but it has a very parallel-play feel for me. And a lot of explaining why I should care about the abstruse parts 🤣

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@thatandromeda Sorry that was the general "you" not meant to imply anything 😅 I agree we could collectively stand to explain less. I hope you stick around long enough for it to continue evolving & growing such that it becomes a niche concern.

finlaydag33k,

@rolle It's free and extremely unlikely to suddenly require me to pay a subscription or something in the future.

Also, less worry about having to follow the narrative of 1 entity.

Triskerslake,

@rolle The something else is the people - conversing with sensible, adult individuals makes life so much nicer.

@anopka@social.tchncs.de avatar

@rolle Actually one of the coolest features is federation and the possibility to interact with other non-Mastodon Fediverse platforms as well, like , , (when using the ActivityPub plugin), , , etc. So in most cases there's no need to create a separate account on the other platform.

@rolle
The 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 to like any fediverse network, is it is 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥.

All of the other benefits come from that. You choose your network. You choose your instance. You don't pressure friends and family which one to join.

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@rolle First I was on Google+, and then I had to start over when it was closed down.

Then I was on Twitter, and I had to start over when Elon Musk bought it.

Being on a platform that is not subject to corporate whims is very attractive to me right now.

Tattooed_mummy,
@Tattooed_mummy@cupoftea.social avatar

@juergen_hubert @rolle though I had to move when my instance closed down 😞

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@Tattooed_mummy @rolle At least here, the process is relatively painless and you can take your following list with you - or at least, this was the case for me.

teachpaperless,

@juergen_hubert still not sure why Google shut down Plus before it had a chance to hit its stride.

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@teachpaperless It didn't produce enough value for the quarterly business reports, I suppose.

Google doesn't do much long-term planning these days anymore.

teachpaperless,

@juergen_hubert that's probably it. They want to be first or scale very fast else it's a bust, in their view.

kmjreade,

@rolle I like it because I am in control of what I see, and it seems more civilized for lack of better words.

TembryGlitz,

@rolle most casual users here are pretty mask off when it comes to socializing here. You won’t get that elsewhere where shit you say on deadbird can have very real consequences for standing up for what’s right.

dale_price,
@dale_price@mastodon.online avatar

@rolle federation is underappreciated as a feature. Being able to follow & interact with whoever we want, independently of which platform they’re on, just might end the era of one or two companies being able to dominate just by having the most users.

MariaLiv,
@MariaLiv@toot.io avatar

@rolle I like the fact that people are genuinely nice to one another here. I’ve made better friends in the fediverse than I’ve ever have irl. 🥰

kagan,
@kagan@wandering.shop avatar

@rolle "Something else": the nice people here make me feel safe and like I could be accepted, and like I don't have to watch everything I say or worry about being piled on by right-wingers very often.

GrayDaDolf,
@GrayDaDolf@mastodon.social avatar

@rolle Something else: I can use it on a Raspberry Pi 3 without needing to sysrq-b it if I scroll too far.

I love how optimized the web client is, and the ability to use other clients if needed (i.e. Toot)

Starry1086,

@rolle I like how -text is 90% of the time a given.

Bibobu,
@Bibobu@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rolle My something else are the hashtags DogsOfMastodon, CatsOfMastodon and Mosstodon.

No more regrets about leaving Twitter after discovering these gems.
