In an interview to promote new movie "Genie," Richard Curtis told the Independent that the scene in "Love Actually" where a character uses cue cards to profess his love to his best friend's wife was, "a bit weird" and that he now understands why it was referred to as "the stalker scene." Tell us in the comments if there are any films you thought were a-OK at the time, and now look back on with horror.

@timrichards Yes, the real challenge is to find a healthy and normal storyline there! We like to think that we recognized at the time that it was ALL awful...

@CultureDesk I was a teenager in the 80s, so probably all of them?

🤔

Yup, that one too.

@drimplausible The worst is popping on a movie that you loved when you were young — perhaps even recommended to other people — and then...

drimplausible,
@drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

@CultureDesk Oh yeah, I've been bitten by the blind recommendation to millenials and GenZs before. 😳😬😬

"Sorry bout that, I'm not a monster, really "

@drimplausible Sometimes the movie is just... bad, and then you look like a person with horrible taste. Brett Goldstein's "Films to be Buried With" podcast has the categories "Favourite critically hated movie" and "Terrible film you loved as a kid," and he gets some great answers to the latter. Woody Allen comes up a lot as do "American Pie" and the "Austin Powers" movies.

@drimplausible @CultureDesk

It is good that we did not have social medias.

edit: if we had, would our ethics have developed more quickly, or would there just be a lot more cringe that the internet would never forget?

I'm glad nobody will see my teenage pukings, for instance.

On the other hand, if a bunch of people had seen just one, perhaps there would have been less pukings overall; we had the luxury of not remembering and very little chance of documentary evidence.

@jpaskaruk @drimplausible Yes, lucky we were pre-social media. The youngest generation seems to be pretty savvy now with not over-sharing — perhaps it's gone too far, where everything has to be polished and posed for the 'gram.

@CultureDesk I think I was about seven or eight years old when I saw Song of the South. How cute was cartoon Br'er Rabbit? Now I completely understand why there are so many articles (and at least one book) about how problematic that movie is. https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/3c80ccb2-afca-4566-ad7d-fc9558237ef0

@dbsalk Yes, it's more or less unavailable now because of its racism. The BBC took a look at all of Disney's problematic movies when they launched stronger content warnings.

@CultureDesk all of love actually was always a violation of the audience. There’s nothing decent about it. Those poor actors.

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@kierkegaank Yes, it's hard to think of an UNproblematic plotline in that movie — the prime minister and the "fat" tea girl, Colin Firth falling in love with the housekeeper he's never had a conversation with... Variety did a pretty good (though actually, relatively kind) breakdown here:

@CultureDesk i wanted to leave and ask my money back at the time, but my company liked it :/
