Visited the Jurassic Jamboree in Drumheller today as we attempted to set a world record for most inflatable Dinos gathered.

Unofficial tally is around 3000, which blows out the old record like a meteor hitting the Yucatan.

Silly (or maybe not) question:

So what exactly is social media for?

For some, it is a way to sell ads into an addicted audience. But we are trying to get away from that with the #Fediverse. So if it's not that, what is it for, exactly?

And for you personally: if you didn't have social media, what exactly would you miss in your life? Which needs or wants do you have that would be unmet?

I'd love a broad variety of responses. Reshare?

@J12t It's a good question, and well worth asking ourselves. I feel like I addressed some of this last year on the podcast, when we looked at various social media as "meta-topical spaces", as part of the public sphere.

The community answer is a good one too.

But I think it's best answered by seeing how TikTok works, as it really aced the "media" part of social media, above all others.

Social Media is both the content and the community. It's watching a movie together and chatting about it.

    @johnshirley2024 I felt similarly perhaps 15-20 years ago when a college offered a semester length course on the topic of Lady Gaga, and I was aghast, but then I kinda got out of it.
    Taylor Swift is no different in this regard, though I think the Swifties are more of a force than the Monster ever were.
    But that's the thing: the fact that both of them have a fanbase large enough to be a) identified by name and b) make an impact beyond the pop music sphere warrants the study.

    How on earth did the "nobody can beat goku" meme get started because it was obviously not from a dragon ball fan.

    Getting stronger after losing is literally the primary gimmick of both Goku's race and the entire series. Goku loses almost half the time.

    I had pretty meh performance but technically, every short I make is more or less ready to just spit directly on tiktok. IDK if it'd be 'worth it' and I do not morally or...entertaining'd...ly...like the platform at all

    I'm trying to understand the problems converting office buildings into residential. One problem is just duplicating plumbing (bath/kitchen) from a few locations into one each in multiple apartments. Ok.

    The other is that modern office buildings (post Wright/Johnson Wax I guess) use forced air ventilation primarily, and artificial lighting, such that there would be large areas away from windows for air and light.

    Also. Not today surprised that was the source of the match. As you observed, it's a dating app too. I (and others, I'm sure) have noted that any app that functionally replicates the in some way will allow for those things that took place within it
