If genuine, Russia appears to be destabilizing internally (or concerned about that happening), in part because they have angered a major outside faction that the Russian govt. had relied on to do some of their heavier, dirty lifting in their war with Ukraine; they attacked their own ally on the front lines from behind (whether intentionally or by ineptitude).
