Part of the problem with running your own #selfhosted#email server is dealing with spam. I use RBLs and whatnot, but when something gets by, part of the fun is using #Postfix to get creative with the #SMTP transactions.
Sometimes, if I block an IPv4 subnet, I explicitly tell the spammers that they can try resending their spam over #IPv6. That should help spur adoption and phase out #legacyIP.
Looking for recs: #selfHosted photo collection to replace Google photos??? Dont need any of the fancy neural net stuff (though I mean being able to do search would be a plus), mostly looking for backup and albums. I have tried piwigo but pretty dang janky. I can/will search more myself so mostly looking for any personal experiences ❤️❤️.
If you care about avoid storing your data in the cloud, you should care about not storing your financial data in the cloud either. #selfhosted#monero#zcash#crypto
Fun facts: I first posted on Twitter in 2008. I had 3000 max last year. My most popular/viral tweet was last year during the trucker #convoy in Ottawa. 226 RTs. Since joining Mastodon in November I have 1700 followers and I’ve already managed to produce posts with more than 500 Boosts. I am #selfhosted with 3 people on my server. But tell me again how engagement on #Mastodon and the #Fediverse is not good enough for the ‘important people’.
I'm a PhD candidate in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I'm studying Internet culture and am interested in how individual people relate to corporations, governments, etc. through various types of technology.
My dissertation is about how individual people are constructed as "Users" on the internet.
@bpettis Hmm. I'd be interested to hear what you learn. As somebody who worked in tech, and especially in support, the word "User" always came naturally as shorthand for "People who use our stuff" - something broader that encompasses so much more than just "customer". It was only MUCH later in life that I heard people object to the term because they read it in the same way as how some people call drug addicts "users".
So it'd be useful to know how widely these understandings are spread, and how "user" affects our relationships with the people who use our work, and especially whether I need to change how I communicate about these things.
I'm so excited about existing self-hosted applications (https://selfh.st/apps/) and possibilities to integrate them, so I dumped some of my random thoughts on pubnix-like community infrastructure in this post:
Software launches, updates, new directory apps, a spotlight on Alex Kretzschmar @ironicbadger - a content creator and frequent contributor to the self-hosted community, and more in this week's self-hosted recap!
Just switched my #SelfHosted#PeerTube instance from using #Redis to #Valkey now that it has a stable release out as a #Docker#container too, and.. that went too easily 😅. I know this makes sense as it is 100% compatible, but it still feels quite amazing to have it just work.
In case it helps; I just switched to using the valkey/valkey:7-alpine image, and because I also renamed things in my docker-compose I added PEERTUBE_REDIS_HOSTNAME=valkey to the PeerTube .env file too. That's it!
Fellow #selfhosted#admins: how do you move important things (like family photos, as most other things are replaceable) under your own wing and sleep at night? One problem with disc or os and boom, all of it is gone. Like tears in rain.
@mms I don't host in any manner, and have lost irreplaceable photos. I have been thinking if self-hosting #Hubzilla and having a live clone of it would work out.
Dropped some updates to selfh.st/apps this morning - tiles now have visible/clickable tags, URL properties have been added for sharing custom views with others, and I've added a ton of new project icons.
I'm completely open to feedback on future improvements, but probably won't consider adding any more details to the tiles to prevent them from becoming too cluttered.

This website solved an issue I had. A good alternative to Typeform. Because we all know 21 EUR/month * 12 months (252 EUR) for a subscription is absolute horseshit.
Project activity, software launches, updates, a spotlight on #sup3rS3cretMes5age - a one-time, self-destructing messaging service, and more in this week's self-hosted recap!
