For example, the Prior plague, would we need offworld or off-reality contacts to be able to deal with it, or is modern medicine up to the task, with mRNA vaccines and CRISPR?...
Latest kbin code update has temporarily broken the search feature, waiting for a fix from @ernest; kbin.social is suffering from the same issue as a result....
I've been trying to join https://lemmy.world/c/climbing@lemmy.ml from kbin, but it's not coming up on the magazine search. If I search for that or !climbing, it just says "empty"....
For #Lemmy users, I just found out that there is a way to get #RSS newsfeeds of a Lemmy community. It is easier to show an example than explain. If you would be reading the Security News community at its home site using
Unfortunately I can't find anything similar for #kbin - anyone know if it is possible to get an RSS feed of a kbin community (or "magazine" as they call it)? I looked at the FAQ by @kbinMeta but could not find anything about RSS feeds.
I would risk a hot-take that Threadiverse today is where Fediverse was in April 2022: some infra exist, some long-established communities are there, and there is now sudden popular interest, stress-testing the network.
The number of new people with accounts is less important, I feel.
What is more important now is how many new instances spring up to spread the load? How many people commit to being moderators and otherwise tending to their communities' needs?
Fediverse is essentially the infrustructure that lemmy is built on (see also mastodon, kbin, etc). It's a way of decentralizing a platform. Essentially, imagine if reddit had a bunch of separately and independently hosted websites that shared content with each other. That's what lemmy is. And it is distributed and built on the "fediverse" or federated universe.
From what I got Kbin is an instance of Lemmy and Lemmy part of the Fediverse. The Fediverce is made up of a bunch of different types of social platforms.
eg:
Microblogging: Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey
Blogging: Write.as, Read.as
Video hosting: Peertube
Audio hosting: Funkwhale
Image hosting: Pixelfed
Link aggregator: Lemmy
Instances are those platforms being hosted by a user. It's like their own personal reddit. They get to make their own rules and stuff. The cool thing is all the instances can talk to each other. And you can choose to communicate the other instances.
There's more to it but I don't really understand everything.
Ernest's interaction with the community was the primary reason I chose kbin. He seems like a good dude and I have faith in his ability to steer it in a good direction.
Seriously, this. I tried for days to register on Lemmy. One day I was mid-registration and the button was just spinning, doing nothing, so I came over to kbin, registered and started using the site. Lemmy never stopped spinning. No thanks.
I've been using Kbin and Lemmy so far and I like both, but Kbin seems much more stable right now. I like kbin interface a bit more and the ranking algo seems to work better (there an issue on lemmy with hot and posts being added that should not be there). Kbin also let's me sort by 3hr/6hr/12hr in addition to normal sorting options.
kbin does seem more stable. It hasn't had issues for the couple days I've been here, while lemmy has gone down quite a few times during the same time frame.
Lemmy.world initially cause I didn't like the overbearing moderation and locked communities of beehaw.org and the developers of lemmy.ml. Kbin seems to be great and I prefer its timeline / sorting, I just wish it was a bit more polished with magazine syncing and certain UI features, but that should come with time.
How would you do that? Each and every Toot is isolated and a far distance away from the "blog post from yesterday" - there is no blog roll or similar. (Yes, tags may help to find all of your blog posts, but...)
Here in #kbin you would create your own unique magazine - with your own rules. And you can enforce the rules because you are (the only) moderator. In a magazine you get an index page with a list of your blog posts for example.
Perhaps I should try it... if only I had topics to put into a blog... :-)
I'm a Reddit refugee and in all the years I was there I never made a single post. I'm very much enjoying the Fediverse, especially Lemmy, and thought I'd share my happy place with you all.
Hi there fellow refugee, don't mind me commenting random stuff to get accustomed to kbin's interface (transitions are hard, and technology-wise Im a bit of a grandma, nothing practice won't solve).
I wish I could fully move to kbin and avoid the federation drama but there’s currently no way to move my post and comment history to a new account. I guess for now I’ll just use kbin to view the communities I can no longer see in Beehaw.
The https://kbin.social server is now federating with the Fediverse. You can follow/interact with kbin.social magazines & users from other Kbin servers, Mastodon & rest of the Fediverse. For example the TIL magazine is at @TodayILearned, the lead dev of Kbin is at @ernest
There's a new Kbin server at https://readit.buzz which is run by the same people as the Universodon.com Mastodon server. It's open for signups, just click "log in" and then "register".
@feditips@cazzztle i think it’s a potential barrier to entry for users. from my perspective, i see a “service” as various platforms with a specific purpose. pixelfed for sharing images (a la instagram), peertube for video sharing, and mastodon for microblogging. whereas “federation” is being able to access content on other instances without having to leave your home “pane of glass”, ex: seeing kbin posts on mastodon.
SSO may reduce barrier to entry for discrete services if you want to use them.
After the (temporary) defederation announcement of earlier i checked the Lemmy repo to see if there was already a ticket on the federation limiting option like Mastodon's that people mentioned Lemmy doesn't yet have. Not only i didn't find it, i also saw that there's about 200+ open tickets of variable importance. Also saw that...
Maybe I should learn Rust for this. I've never used it but otherwise I've got 20 years of programming experience so can probably pick it up. I'm very experienced with web development so maybe that's a better area where I can contribute.
Someone mentioned that kbin uses PHP which makes it tempting to switch over... I do experience with PHP.
(How) Has modern technology caught up to Stargate? (spoilers)

How do I search for certain Lemmy communities on Kbin?
I've been trying to join https://lemmy.world/c/climbing@lemmy.ml from kbin, but it's not coming up on the magazine search. If I search for that or !climbing, it just says "empty"....
A couple of easy questions that I can seem to figure out the answers to...
1. Can you find/interact with a kbin magazine from a lemmy instance (i.e lemmy.ml)? If so, how?...
What is fediverse and why is it so talked about in this site?
fediverse?
Almost 5K Pirates migrated to lemmy. We're now 4th in lemmy communities browser! (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
Incredible growth. just goes to show how little we needed to be in Reddit....
Why did you choose your instance?
I'm currently struggling to find my home. I have an account here at lemmy.ml, where most of my posts are, and one at kbin....
Creating a community as a personal blog
Is this a frowned upon practice or something that doesn't matter?
My first post (sh.itjust.works)

what does it mean that Beehaw "defederated" from lemmy.world?
I thought I understood, but I still have Beehaw content in my feed, so I guess I don't understand after all... Can someone dumb it down for me?
With the defederation active, how has it affected your subscriptions?
Now that we're no longer linked to lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works we can't subscribe to their communities any more....
