Curtis's humiliation came from the fact that at his graduation, the ramp to get onto the stage was too steep & #inaccessible for #WheelchairUsers.

If your customer service requires a person to call in rather than using written communication media, it is not accessible to people who are autistic, have social anxiety, are hearing-impaired, or have other communication or sensory impairments. You are telling your customers we don't matter to you if we are disabled. Is that really the kind of message you want to send?

Dear Web peeps,

What resources do you recommend for someone that’s just staring to learn about web accessibility? Courses, sites, people, etc.

I’m a 🧽 at the moment. Thanks!

T, to random

A friend of a friend, who is blind, got placed in “accessible” accommodation recently where all the amenities (washing machine, microwave, intercom etc.) are touchscreen, if ever you wonder how fucking ignorant non-disabled people can be.

Gif of the octopus from Penguins of Madagascar movie throwing something away and saying “this is why we test things, people”.

T,

Although they did also say the first clue that they might not be the sort of tenant wanted was that the online application form wasn’t compatible with their screen reader, so someone else had to fill it in for them.
🤦‍♂️

T,

If I were sceptical I would assume this sort of thing is so councils can get discretionary discounts for building accessible housing and then claim they didn’t manage to get enough disabled tenants, thus rent out the rest of the spaces to able-bodied tenants at higher rents. /s

Even therapy is ableist, apparently. The group I just had a consult with has a policy that after being late or not showing to an appointment twice, they won't continue providing their services. So if you have a disability that can cause difficulties with timeliness, like ADHD, services can be denied to you for that reason. I guarantee you they don't provide accommodations of any sort to help mitigate the impact of this policy on care for people with such disabilities. No extra reminders. No increased flexibility. Nada.

If you struggle conforming to expectations, you will not be able to get help conforming to expectations. In my experience, the entirety of human society works this way, whatever your disability happens to be.

Well I'm quite upset. It seems the test @RickiTarr posted is inaccessible. The "next" button doesn't show up as a clickable item, so when I try to click on it nothing happens. I guess I'm not allowed to do what the cool kids are doing, influence anyone, or even just have silly fun on the internet anymore. Mentioning the fate I think should befall people who make these simple things inaccessible would get me banned from the internet.

📖🔊 For many, it's not about the luxury of choice in how we read, but the fundamental right to access. Text-to-speech isn't just a feature; it's a gateway to the world of books for the visually impaired. Let's celebrate and advocate for accessibility in reading! # ReadingForAll 👁️🌐

One of the kittle things that can impact accessibility at work is the scheduling of meetings during lunchtime. One of my most common triggers for an autistic meltdown is being hungry. I get sensory overload from the sensation of hunger very quickly, and my ability to think clearly to handle the situation is simultaneously impacted. It can also impact people with blood sugar problems (diabetes, hypoglycemia). And there are various other disabilities for which people might count on having that midday break.

@julia @Chozo I had not considered that it might be less accessible to people. I generally use inline hashtags to save space, but maybe I should just break it into multiple posts.

Boosting for reach.

remember, blindness is a spectrum. If you see someone on their phone, it doesn't mean they're faking their disability. They could be using screen readers or magnification to navigate the digital world. Let's show empathy and understanding. 📱🔊

I've been working on and off on a blog post on alt text for ages, and I've never actually posted it because I figured it's the same advice people have probably heard a million times.

But, even in 2023 I keep seeing the same mistakes being made, so I figured it can't do any harm to hit publish!

So, here is my take on alt text if it's useful: https://www.craigabbott.co.uk/blog/how-to-write-good-alt-text-for-screen-readers/

Let's be clear about this: Accessibility is not a feature. Inaccessibility is a bug.

If your software or website is inaccessible, that renders it unusable to the end user. It is broken, in other words.

I am really, really, REALLY irritated by what I just saw. The function of Microsoft's is outright lying to people with vision impairments about what appears in images it receives. It's bad enough when an is allowed to tell lies that a person can easily check for veracity themselves. But how the hell are you going to offer this so-called service to someone who can't check the claims being made and NEEDS those claims to be correct?

How long till someone gets poisoned because Bing lied and told someone it was food that hasn't expired when it has, or that it's safe to drink when it's cleaning solution, or God knows what? This is downright irresponsible and dangerous. either needs to put VERY CLEAR disclaimers on their service, or just take it down until it can actually be trusted.

People say "well don't use an adblocker, sites need to run ads to exist", and it's not just a thing of not wanting to see any ads, it's just that the ways they are served are horrifically ugly a lot of the time. Many, many websites seen without an adblocker are just a gibbering mess.

Ads in old physical media were omnipresent but not so unrelentingly awful. You could read a magazine with ads in and it wouldn't be jarringly ugly, you could flip past ads, you could live with it.

hosford42,
@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@llamasoft_ox Don't forget about ! I literally can't read articles with ads. The motion on the page makes it impossible for me because of my sensory processing disorder. And some people get motion sickness from it. The fact that we aren't offered a way to turn off motion is the main reason I use ad blockers. After swatting down popup ads with videos every 2 seconds for 2 minutes straight, I give up on reading the article at all.

I am reminded daily that disabled people are second class citizens whose needs aren't respected by the general population by the lack of an option to turn off all motion that isn't requested, neither in the browser nor by the ad "services" nor by the content providers. We aren't even an afterthought.

From now on, if someone posts an image with no , and someone else responds with alt text, I'm going to boost the alt text and not the original image. I encourage others to do the same.

If you post images for the punchiness, reach, or clout, this is your cue to be a little more prosocial about it.

There's a lot of good pictures out there that won't get boosted because people are not doing . There's a lot of folks on Mastodon that do not boost without AltText being present.

So join the challenge of writing a description of your image/video! It helps all sorts of people, and more people will boost your stuff! Thanks!
