Over half a million German Roman Catholics left the church last year alone. Why do people break with the institution? DW's Christoph Strack caught up with one of those who have done so.
One of my friends is a Monsignor in the Catholic Church. He recently sent me this. (And yes, the meme should say "St. Augustine" who was indeed African.)

More than 700 professors, authors and researchers from academic centers in Latin America, the United States, Canada, Europe and Africa on Monday condemned the closure and confiscation of the Jesuit Central American University of Nicaragua (UCA) by Daniel Ortega’s government last month....
Hi, everyone. I really need to vent. I don't expect anybody to actually read this whole thing, but if you do I'd love it if you could share your thoughts with me....
'Pope Francis has fired the Texan bishop Joseph Strickland, a fierce critic who has questioned the Pope's leadership of the Catholic church... Bishop Strickland has launched a series of attacks on the Pope's attempts to update the Church's position on social matters and inclusion, including on abortion, transgender rights and same-sex marriage.'
Sometimes when we walk, we pass by this statue of Jesus at the Queen of Angels Church right off Welles Park in Lincoln Square. We often call him Bangra Jesus. Put on some Bangra music and look at the photo - ROFL
i renounced catholicism more than 25 years ago and have raised two happy healthy atheists... and Papa Kiko is one of the most exciting things to have happened to #Catholicism since... well... the alleged natural death of Pope John Paul I after the untimely passing of Pope Paul VI.
In 2022, there were just 42,000 nuns in America and the majority were elderly. For The Baffler, Lauren Fadiman spent some time with Benedictine sisters and explored the history and decline of religious life. "There was a time when the convent was the closest a woman could get to both the Lord and women’s lib," she writes. "The vow of chastity lifted the burdens of early marriage, bad sex, and potentially lethal childbirth; the habit released women from the obligations of beauty; and the requisite knowledge of Latin and a wide range of religious texts required that nuns be well-educated."
If someone consider himself as a Catholic, but doesn't strive to live like a Franciscan and doesn't welcome and care for everyone without any exceptions, then he doesn't get what it is to be a Catholic.
If he hates people from sexual and gender minorities, foreigners, and any oppressed person, he doesn't get what it is to be a Catholic.
If he doesn't believe in the strict equality between all living things, then he doesn't get what it is to be a Catholic.
If he believes in any other dogma than love, care and selfishness, then he doesn't get what it is to be a Catholic.
All those reactionary conservatives are not Catholics. It's like Stalin saying he is a communist.
