Taken at Patel Brothers on Devon Avenue during one of our frequent trips to get good food and groceries. Since I started posting here, I notice certain things more often and this photo just struck me.

First Results from DESI Make the Most Precise Measurement of Our Expanding Universe

Researchers have used the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument to make the largest 3D map of our universe and world-leading measurements of dark energy, the mysterious cause of its accelerating expansion

The first results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument () show preliminary signs of new physics.

They looked at baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), bubbles that formed in the early universe and froze as the universe expanded and cooled. These bubbles lead to an overdensity of galaxies — a ruler used to measure the expansion history of the universe. The measurements hint that dark energy may be evolving over time.

Need ideas on how to spread the awareness without boring people to death 😅

You know it’s a very Bengali Thanksgiving when the family is gathered around the laptop, watching a Nobel Prize winner make potatoes

For many settling in , the transition isn’t as intimidating as it used to be. Thanks to YouTube & Instagram influencers, they arrive armed with info, from scoring a free phone to accessing free groceries at charity food banks & more.

In recent weeks, several international students lining up for free groceries have received notices from their colleges stating that these are intended for the most vulnerable in society

🍉 There is a long history of South Asian American activists standing with colonized people under attack.

I recently came across this 1947 newspaper clipping on the South Asian American Digital Archive website.

The article is from the papers of ex-Gadharite Godha Ram Channon.

It describes him teaming up with Black, Greek, Communist, and labor organizers in San Francisco to protest Dutch attacks during the Indonesian National Revolution.

Exhausted for today:

  1. It's nice to be in pjs and home after a long working day.
  2. Hot chrysanthemum tea on a rainy evening always hits the spot.
  3. Yesterday's late night payasam also hits the spot for tonight's dessert. So lovely! (also all gone now).

As a bonus, here's a quick meal hack: if you're out of indian vermicelli or can't find it, spaghettini works really well and has exactly the right texture for payasam. Just don't tell the italians you're using it in an indian dessert! 😉

I've seen way too many groups adopting tired South Asian food acronyms.

But NOTHING will ever beat this perfect bilingual acronym from Montreal:

GARAM MASALA:
Groupe d'Action Révolutionnaire sud-Asiatique de Montréal / Montreal Alliance of South Asian Leftists and Allies

Astronomers Find a Rare "Einstein Cross"

Astronomers use powerful gravitational lenses to peer farther into the Universe than they could with their telescopes alone. A foreground galaxy acts as a natural lens for a more distant galaxy, magnifying it and often splitting its light into several versions. When the alignment is almost perfect, the light is split four ways into an "Einstein Cross." Only a few of these have ever been discovered, and now astronomers have found a new one using the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. It's both beautiful and scientifically valuable for studying the distant Universe.

For the time, saw the term History Month being used, apparently an "inclusive" update of to include "Desi Americans."

I always hated the word , seeing it as a North Indian term & representative of cultural imposition. And it is - derived from Hindustani, and, according to Wikipedia its use is "usually restricted to Sanskrit-derived (Indo-Aryan) languages."

Of course, Indian-American identity has always been very North-Indian centric, unfortunately. So not surprising.

🧵 Happy !

People usually trace Asian American movements to 1968.

But I found an old newspaper article about an "Oriental Students Association" at the University of California in 1907, with members from India, China, Thailand, and Japan.

Do you see what I see? Here's the story 👇🏽

4/ I research early / / histories in Berkeley, California, so some of the names are familiar to me.

For example, Girindra Mukerji was a student organizer outspoken in his opposition to British empire.

He became President of the Oriental Students Association, and led Berkeley's first South Asian anti-racist protest in 1908.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girindra_Mukerji

But I don't know the Japanese, Chinese, and Thai co-founders. There's much more here to dig into!

I love Mastodon, but I miss my POC activist, , and communities back on Instagram and Twitter.

Like back on IG and Twitter, folks I know are talking about , opposing the proposed Texas law that would prohibit immigrants from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia from owning property.

I’m just not seeing that on here, and it’s unfortunate.
