The new #apt version in #Debian unstable is SO GOOD.

If you run Debian or a derivative, I recommend grabbing it from somewhere and giving it a spin.

The "Space needed" overview needs some UX love as it shows kB/MB/GB next to each other without making the relations obvious at a glance. But other than that... sooo good.

Current state of my Linux laptops:

ThinkPad T14 Gen 3: Fedora 40 (KDE spin)

I just did a fresh install in the past week-ish to migrate to KDE from GNOME, and wanted a fresh start.

ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (AMD): Debian 12 with GNOME

Previously ran Pop!_OS with the development version of COSMIC DE. I wanted a Debian-based laptop to more closely reflect the Debian servers that I use to host my Wait Wait Stats stuff. I'm not going testing or unstable, since I don't run those on my servers.

Surface Pro 3: Fedora 40 (KDE spin)

I did a fresh install this week to clear out some of the lingering issues from an install of a pre-release version of the KDE spin of Fedora 40.

I initially wanted to see how FreeBSD would run on the Surface Pro 3, but I didn't want to tempt fate as I sometimes take the Surface with me on the go.

Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!

It was an insane idea for to strip things out of like that and especially to that extent.

Stripping out network comms, I can sort of understand. But stripping support for browser integration? Madness.

IMO, the upstream maintainer was right when they said they should have created keepassxc-min instead.

None of that, though, excuses the subsequent pile-on.

@crepererum Wow, less than a year!

I can totally see their point though - it's essentially an example of the difficulties people used to have with long-term stable distros like CentOS, at some point you want to be able to use newer deps without breaking a chunk of your users

Giving #OpenSuse Leap a try. Would like to go from my rather moody #ArchLinux to a more stable system. Feels like I learned everything I could in terms of usage, now I want something that needs less maintaining and gives me more time to do other things.

Given I do not trust US companies (not necessarily because of the company, but the legislation they have to follow) #Fedora or anything #Ubuntu was an absolute no-go. And #Debian just isn't modern enough, despite being dead-stable. 😉

Willy_Wuff,
@Willy_Wuff@troet.cafe avatar

Any idea why greek accents aren't working in latest message editor?
As a workaround, using autocorrection after writing message.

Problem is thunderbird specific, every other app in system works as expected.

Fully upgraded sid version.
Also tried v125 from experimental, same issue.

@thunderbird so problem seems to happen in existing thunderbird profile..

no such issue with a new profile...
any hints how to fix existing profile?

btw, starting TB with --safe-mode doesn't help.

thunderbird,
@thunderbird@mastodon.online avatar

@uhuru Thanks for letting us know -safe-mode didn't help. We've looked for a possible solution but this isn't an easy problem or one that's been asked. It could be the particular Greek font, but we'd recommend filing a support issue on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/thunderbird
