Several of the major social media platforms - Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Twitter - have effectively declared war on linking to things and I absolutely hate it
"Link in my bio" / "Link in thread" / "Link in first comment"... or increasingly no link at all, just an unsourced screenshot of a page
A couple of things there Simon. How do you know this? Are you still using the deprecated, privacy mining, monolithic silos to which you refer, or are you just taking this on the word of good, 3rd party information sources?
If it's the former, why?
If it's the latter, then yippie kai yay! The demise of these platforms is underway and in full swing - just as Steve Ballmer once called Linux "Cancer", the fact that these silos aren't simply ignoring links to particular resources, especially those in the #Fediverse, and have taken up with the practice of actively blocking them, is a good thing; and you, as a #Fedizen, should be proud.
Yet again, if it is the former, and you really insist on validating and monetizing those privacy mining silos via your subjugation as inventoried chattel there, consider pinning something akin to the following to the top of your profile (make sure to read the alt-text for the image):
Hearing my morning (in UK) greeting from Alaska, courtesy of @bluenagoon on #RadioFreeFedi reminds me to give a shout out to Blue and Co.
Great songs, accessible as pop but also with really original layers in the arrangements and instrumentation. Engaging lyrics that are not from the formulaic, thesauri, rhyming-fictionary school of writing; one line (but there's loads) comes to mind, "My cat has claimed you for his own". Excellent! And great vocalists! 😊
1.) No. It is not (Short answer, in direct response to your question).
2.) Not linking directly to YouTube videos is actually ahead of the curve not behind it.
3.) Your current pactice to date of not linking directly to YouTube videos has a lot of benefits to your readers whether they bother to directly appreciate it or not. Here are some reasons for that, and facilities waiting for you, as a #Fedizen in the #Fediverse, and one who can appreciate the protection of people's privacy and data integrity free of being quantified by industrial data and privacy mining engines:
PeerTube is a great resource, and you can link directly to any video hosted on PeerTube. Not only that but #PeerTube has facilities to quickly clone any YouTube VoD (check the license at YouTube or contact the Copyright owner (creator/publisher) directly if they didn't take the time to avoid the default YouTube license.
If you're the publisher/creator of the VoD then what some folks do is to upload part of it to YouTube with a big splash banner alerting the viewer to visit a particular URL to the PeerTube instance (Many also specify Odysee) video. There are a lot of very prominent so-called YouTube influencers or creators that do this as standard practice, even splitting their videos into two versions - the beginning, which is on YouTube, and the rest of the video which is hosted somewhere else in its entirety, and this works very well for them.
If it's not your creation, then there's a few #FOSS tools to instantly convert a YouTube URL to a VoD into an Invidious URL to stream the video. What's especially awesome about doing it this way, is that, on almost all Fediverse platforms, even the decrepit stock mastodon instances, a very pretty link preview of the video is presnted, and most Fediverse platforms even support an embedded player experience right there in your stream so you never have to leave your Fediverse client.
Following up on that last suggestion, is the fact that when you post an invidious link to a video anyone who clicks through to view it can simply click on the download button, choose the quality of the video, and voila! They now have a local copy for themselves!
NOTE: There are a lot of invidious servers across the Internet, I recommend choosing a good stable one that's been around for a while, and using that one by setting up a shortcut for yourself (you only need to insert the YouTube ID in the URL). If anything ever happens to that server you can quickly replace the actual Invidious instance for all of your vids :)
So again, to recap what I said in response to your poll, No. You're not behind the curve at all, you're a #pathfinder, ahead of the curve, doing your part to respect the privacy of others who may otherwise be deprived of the content that you publish.
As a #Privacy conscious publisher and obviously, a member of the Fediverse thank you for your commitment to user safety and the protection of their own Intellectual property and privacy, free from the tracking and privacy mining operations of the deprecated, monolithic silos!
We've just enabled Full Text search on buddyverse.xyz !
Here's the friendly request: If you ever notice our server working hard to meet your requests and you appreciate the effort, consider dropping a few bucks on my Buy Me a Coffee page. Your support goes a long way in keeping things running smoothly. ☕💙
I wanted to share some thoughts with you all. On the Fediverse, we engage in discussions, offer critiques, and sometimes, misunderstand each other. But have you ever stopped to think about the bigger picture?
None of us knows what tomorrow will bring. It's a universal uncertainty we all share.
When we pass away, everything we've done in life becomes insignificant. Perhaps I've said hurtful things about some of you, but in the grand scheme of things, it won't matter when I'm no longer part of this existence.
Life is incredibly short, and maybe we should cherish what we have left.
If I've ever hurt any of you in any way, I ask for your forgiveness before you lay down to sleep tonight.
You might not be there tomorrow to seek forgiveness from.
I pledge to do the same.
The way I interact with all of you often mirrors the circumstances I find myself in. Sometimes, life throws us curveballs, and we might act out of character.
Life can be unpredictable, but I want to express my gratitude for your presence here.
🥥 So as not to overwhelm the #Fediverse and because I'm lazy AF, I only recommend one #Fedizen per day.
Today's lucky winner is @lowqualityfacts.
Not only is Low a provider of "facts" of dubious quality, he/she/they painstakingly illustrate each fact with a hand-crafted original work of art that looks deceptively naive in a folk-art kind of way.
If YOU'RE capable of appreciating this level of sophistication, #Follow Low, and tell him/her/them that Crazy Phil the coconut guy sent you. 🥥
For people new to the fediverse/mastodon: there are some strong customs and strong personalities. I can make a few important quality of life recommendations to give you a more pleasant experience:
In your account settings, go to filters and add a filter to block the following words:
Nazi
Fash
Fascism
Fascist
Twitter
Reddit
Elon
Musk
Defederate
Fediblock
There’s a lot of name-calling and protracted and unproductive discussions using these words. Certainly it’s up to you, but this is my recommendation.
We strongly encourage you to add alt text to any images you post, and if for some reason you do not, you’ll likely be met with many replies all reminding you, with varying levels of intensity, that you forgot. I recommend blocking any account who is rude about it.
Some times you may post something important to you that causes others to be uncomfortable without a content warning. Similarly, you can expect replies of varying politeness asking you to “add a CW”. Things that are patently offensive or not safe for work definitely should have a content warning for obvious reasons, but other than that, use your discretion. Again, I recommend simply blocking people who are too aggressive in their replies related to CWs.
Follow your instance’s rules.
You will rightly be bounced for expressing hate, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or unwanted harassment. There is no place for that - don’t do it here. I can’t tell you what to think, but if you want to post hateful or harassing content, you should find another platform somewhere else. It isn’t hard to be kind. Or at least not an ass.
The fediverse is all about delegating control to instances and end users. We have many tools available, like muting and blocking accounts, and blocking entire instances, as well as muting conversations. These are very useful to have a good time on the fedi.
I agree with almost everything you say, @jerry,
Except for the 2nd half of your block list. Reporting and then blocking extremists is a duty of every #Fedizen.
"Reporting and then blocking extremists is a duty of every #Fedizen."
The problem with reporting everything is that -- unless you specifically know without any doubt that the post violates the written Terms-Of-Service on one or both instances (the sending and the receiving), you're just dumping more work into to the laps of moderators who are probably overworked anyway
@stefan
🥥 Damnit, Stefan, I'm a shitposter, not a good #Fedizen!
I finally got that I'm supposed to say #Fediverse instead of #Mastodon, and now you want me to obsess about "in" versus "on."
And I'll thank you kindly to overlook the fact that I used to boost my own toots, you're welcome.
On the other hand, yours is an informative post. Thank you and propz. 🥥
We are dedicated to seeing #websites switch to a more correct 'Fediverse' #iconography.
Share a link to a non-Cloudflare site that uses less appropriate iconography (eg. Mastodon icon) and we'll #volunteer our time to export a Fediverse icon in the exact format size and colour they need.
After they adopt it, they can proudly say they are a #Fedizen.
