Sumadera (須磨寺) is a unique #temple full of iconographic #arts, at the western end of Kōbe (神戸). Perhaps because it's not in Kyōto or Nara, there is little information available online about Sumadera, even in #Japanese. It was founded in 886 and has its own branch of Kūkai's #Shingon#Buddhism: Sumadera-ha (真言宗須磨寺派). It is internationally active, and a place for #religious practices rather than an outdoor museum. By the same token, it's free to enter.
Suma appears in ancient waka poetry (和歌) of 5-7-5-7-7 syllables, and is associated with the Heike Monogatari (平家物語). I was determined to go, despite the rain, because I'd read an article clarifying wabi and sabi with a #waka coincidentally about Suma. The first photos show Sumadera's exchanges with #Nepal resulting in a display of Tibetan #Buddhist and #Hindu#iconography. Although there was light rain on the beach at first, later up at Sumadera the day turned bright.

Because it's #French surrender day over in #Fishguard and because Jemima Nicholas had a #PurplePlaque unveiled today in her honour, here's a little piece I wrote a little while back about the visual #iconography surrounding the Battle of Fishguard.
🎉 The cases for the Hush Line Personal Server arrived yesterday, and I couldn’t be happier with the result!
We worked with an OEM in Taiwan on a custom-designed, security-focused case for our forthcoming self-hosted tip line product, and what was just a concept is now real!
Only 100 exist, and they’ll go on sale after our security audit, and once all the findings are addressed. 🔥
There's a lot of focus on #journalist#Xitter to #Mastodon migration, but the overall story is quite a bit bigger I think.
The #Fediverse offers huge opportunity for independent journalism in a world where so much of #news media are consolidated and in the hands of shady mogul billionaires. In other words Fediverse is both a threat to existing business models, as well as market opportunity.
Every time I want to implement a share icon I struggle with the decision if I should use something that's closer to Android or somethings that's closer to iOS/macOS.
I like the iOS/macOS version a bit more, but the Android version makes more sense I guess? But if you open the page/PWA on iOS it may seem out of place. 🤔
It's quite annoying that pretty much everything has a standard icon everyone understands but sharing has about 20 different icons.
My spur-of-the-moment-joined virtual sacred calligraphy retreat is through the intro session, and, as I suspected, every other person so far is very much a Christian. (I'm trying to translate their words and sentiments into my spiritual view, but as a Christian-cultured person, it is really difficult!)
I'm not sure how openly I want to express my #polytheism. I don't expect hostility, necessarily, merely discomfort. So I suspect I'll sneak it in more subtly, through my text and art choices.
But I'm still pondering WHAT to do. Ideas so far include shorter phrasing, like the Delphic maxims; longer pieces, from ancient prayers to modern poems; symbols/patterns/colors related to the Greek/Roman/Norse pantheons and cultures...
We're exploring illumination, both the technique and the concept, and I think I can probably run with that. But illuminated manuscript culture in the West is so Christian (and Jewish, but that's not mine either) that it is a surprisingly difficult exploration to tease out what a polytheist manuscript culture could be.
Day three is opening with a presentation by and discussion with an Episcopalian iconographer and liturgical artist. I really like her methods and materials, but I am now faced with a desperate desire to share Ptahmassu Nofra-Uaa's work. Would my mostly elder Christian ladies find it as impressive as I do or fail to hurdle the subject matter?
When the quick bright fox jumps over the colourful scorpion … you've got some wonderful friends sending you the latest #GöbekliTepe merch from Turkey. 😉 Çok teşekkürler! 🙏
I just took it, because I saw him give an amusing paper on 'the power of bad album art' a couple years ago using Go to Heaven. The survey is a bit simplistic, I had some nits to pick, but boost if you're willing, thanks!
Today is (apparently) Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day, so here are 4 images showing 16th Century Western perceptions of musicians and their instruments (some more uncommon than others) from the continents of America, Africa, Asia and Europe.

2/2 We as humans love #iconography and apps with fun icons. The more fashionable the better. Icons really, really, really, really matter. We know because for a year we ignored Fediverse, on #FDroid it had an almost satanic ritual icon. On a good day with jarring colours.
Icons matter.
In 2021 we began work on a replacement. In 2022 we finally arrived at a good design with a (2/3)
I was initially skeptical of this story, but it proved to be real! At some point (around 18 - early 19 century) in #Ukraine, artists painted #Orthodox#icons on... dried #fish !
How come? TLDR: these icons were used a sort of a very special professional #protective#charm by a particular type of traveling #merchants. For a bit more details (and illustrations), see the thread below 👇
We are dedicated to seeing #websites switch to a more correct 'Fediverse' #iconography.
Share a link to a non-Cloudflare site that uses less appropriate iconography (eg. Mastodon icon) and we'll #volunteer our time to export a Fediverse icon in the exact format size and colour they need.
After they adopt it, they can proudly say they are a #Fedizen.
