Avenue Mont-Royal is like a fairy tale, and this isn't even its summer peak! There's more seating, greenery, and beauty to come as spring goes on. #Montreal#OpenStreets
It's hard to describe the startling QUIET of these open streets. Hundreds of people out, and all you hear are birds singing, the click of a bike mechanism, and the murmur of conversation. Cities aren't loud, cars are loud. #Montreal#OpenStreets
At the intersection of two roads closed to vehicles in #Montreal, the streets are full of people, even at 11:45 pm on a Sunday night. Closed to vehicles means open to people!
Oh no! Look at all these Old Montréal businesses not generating any profit because of the streets being closed for cars. Utterly devastating move by the city to prevent people from accessing these businesses by having nowhere to park. How dare they doom the economy like this?
> In less than two years, Quebec has hemorrhaged almost 21,000 health-care workers, including a net loss in the number of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic, the latest government figures show.
> The departure of so many workers in so short a period of time is placing Quebec’s health-care system under tremendous pressure, forcing hospitals to close 2,000 beds across the province and leading to record emergency-room overcrowding, as well as a growing backlog in year-long elective surgeries at the McGill University Health Centre.
We are teaming up with kolektiva members to give a workshop at the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair this Saturday May 27th!!!
"Mastodon and Federated Social Media for Anarchists "
>We all love to hate corporate social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, but many of us see them as a necessary evil for organizing events, spreading ideas, and socializing. But well-functioning, open-source alternatives already exist and are part of a flourishing online infrastructure that is much more in line with many anarchists’ ideas and interests, including privacy, decentralization, and autonomy. If you’re curious or confused about the fediverse (or not yet convinced) join us.
(CÉDA, room 125, Fr. and Eng.) 1 - 2:45pm
Naturally there will be copies of fedizine as well as a new french translation!
The #Montreal borough of Rosemont is making headlines (in transport circles) around the world b/c it's going to base its street parking fees on the size and weight of vehicles.
Standard fee is $115 a year; now vehicles heavier than 1600 kg will have to pay $205 (and it's $385 for a second car).
Krispy Kreme is coming back to Canada, and it'll be interesting to see how long they stick around this time! 🍩🇨🇦 Here's to hoping they "doughnut" leave us in a glaze of sadness again like they did in 2005. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/krispy-kreme-canadian-expansion
Montréal suburb Brossard has a traffic light in a school zone that defaults to red, and only turns green when an attached speed camera detects a car driving under the speed limit.
The light is on a 90-day trial, on a 2-lane residential street. Similar signals are widespread across Europe.
Before it was installed, average vehicle speeds of 40 km/h. But in the past week, average speeds have dropped to 29 km/h.
We do a real dumb thing with #pizza in #Montreal. Most generic pizza places here put the pepperoni (which is unusually large diameter discs) between the sauce and the cheese.
Not only does this totally miss the opportunity of making your pepperoni extra delicious when it crisps up in the oven heat, but it creates an entirely stupid layer with nearly zero shear strength so all of your toppings slide off each time you pick up a hot slice.
First of all, IMO, if you're picking up the #pizza slice while it's too hot, you're doing it wrong, cuz you're gonna scald the inside of your mouth.
Secondly, maybe you're picking it up wrong?
I've been eating pizza for over 5 decades in #Montreal (and making it for over 30 years), and I haven't had any issue with toppings sliding off. Just saying
Parallel routes I crossed on a walk today in the space of a few minutes. Lachine Canal, Highway 20, CN/VIA train tracks and the Falaise St-Jacques bike/walking path. #Montreal
This is neat. Porchfest NDG is a weekend-long festival where residents of Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhood play 1 hour concerts on the front porches, yards, etc.
Good morning everyone! It’s nearly 5am, I’m standing at a lonely bus stop and I’m in my way to try and visit every train and Metro station in Montreal in a day.
Follow along here to share in the mirth, and we’ll also see how long a single Mastodon thread can become!
For 183 days this year, up to nearly 9 km of Montreal streets will be pedestrian-only. (Don't say they're closed, it's only cars that are being diverted, not humans!)
