He alerted journalists to what he’d seen. He tearfully recounted the details in a nationally televised appearance in the Israeli Parliament. In the frantic hours, days and weeks that followed the Hamas attack, his testimony ricocheted across the world.
But it turns out that what Otmazgin thought had occurred in the home at the kibbutz hadn’t happened.
Beyond the numerous and well-documented atrocities committed by #Hamas militants on Oct. 7, some accounts from that day, like Otmazgin’s, proved untrue.
“It’s not that I invented a story,” Otmazgin told The Associated Press in an interview, detailing the origins of his initial explosive claim — one of two by ZAKA volunteers about sexual violence that turned out to be unfounded.
“I couldn’t think of any other option” other than the teen having been sexually assaulted, he said. “At the end, it turned out to be different, so I corrected myself.”

An unnamed Israeli paramedic had told media outlets that he found the partially clothed bodies of two teenage girls that bore signs of sexual violence in a home in Be'eri. However, a video taken by an Israeli soldier shows the fully-clothed bodies of three female victims, identified as two sisters and their mother, with no apparent signs of sexual assault. Residents of Be'eri who viewed the video concluded that the paramedic's account of the two girls being sexually assaulted was false.
While the paramedic declined to retract his account, the Israeli military said he may have "misremembered" the location where he saw the teenagers' bodies.

The Times of Israel has reported that the Israeli military detected the activation of Hamas phones using Israeli SIM cards 6 hours before the attack on October 7th.

It is said that all Israelis know someone who was killed on #October7. It was a horrific event that rippled through their society. You can understand why it might change their society.
But #Gaza has a third or less of the population of Jews in Israel. And the IDF says more than 5x as many innocents have now died there than during the attack by #Hamas. Of course this doesn't count the much greater trauma visited on Palestinians than Jews during the conflict in previous decades.
