"When I shared complaints about my housing on social media, they went viral, and I began hearing from people in similar circumstances. It changed the course of my life"
Housing activist Kwajo Tweneboa in the first of a monthly series of articles.
“Britain’s #housing offers the worst value for money of any advanced economy, combining high prices with old, cramped, poorly insulated buildings and long commutes…” 🏚️😪
I'm too familiar with our awful housing, but was surprised to learn that we have less floorspace than not only other Western European nations, but also Japan and central NYC 🤯
The company that rents us this apartment is pretending that "people want to have water consumption measuring devices in their homes" so they have been slowly installing them in.
We already pay for the water per person.
The water is also more expensive this year because water companies got upset that people have been SAVING WATER AND USING IT LESS IN THIS CITY.
"If we were genuinely committed to actualizing the right to shelter in Nova Scotia, the provincial government would regulate the private market in a way that protects renters’ interests. We managed to do this until 1990, before the doctrine of deregulation and market supremacy was adopted, promising to provide for us all.
Gov't needs to BUILD/BUY/CREATE
NON_MARKET HOUSING, NOW!!
Sussex studio flat with a ‘kitchen in the cupboard’ is £800 per month.
Compact is an understatement for this studio flat that could be yours for £800 a month. And hopefully the prospective tenant isn't fussy about the size of their kitchen.
It’s another reminder about the state of the #renting, after a tiny flat was dubbed great value for money last month, despite having no living room and a shower attached to the kitchen.
Once of the mai engines of non-elite #economic#inequality in the UK, is the 'bank of mum & dad'... even as first time buyers drip to their lowest number in a decade the rise of inter-generational support for this who can but increases, locking in the advantage of the capital-owning & forcing the young either to stay at home or navigate the trials & tribulations of private #renting.
And of course, this cements the structural advantage of those families helping their children...
Michael Gove’s department has announced an indefinite delay in banning 'no-fault' evictions, just days before he gives the keynote speech at the National Landlord Conference.
One thing all these property-owning politicians don't understand about renting in 2023 is the nail-biting, hair-tearing, frustration of typing out your entire life story in triplicate. Just to go to to a viewing for a house they'll show to dozens of potential tenants, so most of that digital paperwork is a complete waste of time.
If you actually get the lease, that's another round of exhaustive data entry labour you're performing for the property management company, unpaid of course.
Me:
> Only the information it's reasonable to ask for would be shown
Here's why I specify that. The forms we have to fill out to view a rental property are often used to extract personal information that's totally unrelated to renting a home. If you don't answer all their questions, however unreasonable, it's anyone's guess whether or not you get to view the property. But the implied threat is obvious.
This is one reason I suspect they're #DataFarming on the side.
Have been waiting to hear about whether my #PropertyOwner will let me sign another 12-month #lease, and was mentally preparing for a #rent increase of $50 or more per week.
The email finally came today. There will be another 12-month lease, and increase of $40 per month. I am beyond relieved. And I am so lucky that this well within my means.
Brisbane people love moaning. About the traffic. They love birching. About the foreigners from Asia. They love moaning. About the sunlight savings. They love bitching. About the neigbours. They love moaning. About the neighbours children making noise. But they love bitching AND morning about the Olympics. They aren't happy about...
From the source: “Many folks opt for being #Airbnb hosts over landlords. It gives you flexibility and pricing power. Some have decided to do it full-time. The downside? Occupancy is bad off-seasons. Local laws are designed for conventional renting.”
As a renter who will probably be #Renting for life, I would really like to see an end to Estate Agents doing leaflet drops with “WE CAN SELL YOUR HOUSE LIKE RIGHT NOW”.
I know they can’t possibly know who owns and who rents but in this economy it’s not just a frustrating waste of unnecessarily shiny paper and printer ink, it feels threatening. And I imagine in some cases, triggering.
I could also have ended this post after “Estate Agents”. 👀
When Brisbane people stop bitchin and moaning about the Olympics, you know this is a turning point for Brisbane. Here's why!
