As thousands of runners neared the finish line on Sunday's Around the Bay Road Race, they were greeted with cheers, music, noisemakers and dancing — and at least one cheeky sign.

"Don't trust a fart after this point," warned Maya George's hand-drawn block letters.

She was among hundreds or more packing the sides of east-end streets in Hamilton, close to where the annual race had its new finish line location at Tim Hortons Field.

Federal funding announcements aren't always as emotional as one held Monday morning in Hamilton's east end.

People teared up, hugged and expressed their appreciation for one another's work on a long-term Indigenous health and housing project.

This is so cool. An overwhelming "yes" vote from McMaster students to add a small bike share fee to their tuition, and it becomes the largest source of funding for the system. The kids are alright!!

This makes me furious.

The city claims to have no resources to offer mobility for people with special needs, but it does have plenty of money for policing.

The distribution of tax dollars in Hamilton in 2023 assigned 25% more to policing than what it gave to roads AND HSR combined.

If you want to know what an organization really values, look at its budget. It is not the "clients" with special needs. Use of the word "clients" already speaks volumes.

@Ward1wilson @cameronkroetsch

An infographic showing the use of tax dollars by the City of Hamilton. Policing is the largest item, with $717 (presumably millions). Roads gets $289 and transit gets $284.

Three arrests in Hamilton () this weekend in relation to a Palestine solidarity action at L3 Harris, an arms manufacturer. In classic Hamilton style, the action happened back in November and the arrests just happened this weekend.

One person is out and two are being held for bail. Charges are mischief and masked with intent.

Remember, solidarity involves stepping towards those targeted and not away from criminalized acts. Let's stay solid and keep fighting.

Lovely restoration of one of the oldest and most intact commercial buildings in Hamilton, by some estimates dating back to the 1820s. It’s now in its second century as a still-active watch-menders shop. And look at the details! Tin ceiling. Century-old storefront windows. Tiled threshold.

Front window with red woodwork
Patterned tin ceiling
Tiled threshold at the doorway to the story with patterned red on white tile work

Hiking is a popular fall activity in and around Hamilton and Niagara, but many hikers may be unaware of the work that goes into designing and maintaining their favourite paths.

Even the rugged Bruce, which stretches along the escarpment from Niagara to Tobermory, Ont., receives regular touch ups.

Meet some of the 1,500 volunteers who go ‘all-in’ to clean up and fix Ontario hiking trails: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/hiking-trails-volunteers-1.7016794
