If you only read one article this year, it has to be THIS by @Mer__edith, the president of #signal :
"AI is a marketing term, not a technical term of art. [...]
This is also why it’s imperative that we recognize mass surveillance – and ultimately the surveillance business model – as the root of the large-scale tech we’re currently calling “AI”."
MEP @echo_pbreyer for a long time is raising awareness of the pervasive #privacy-eroding nature of this regulation, which won't have its intended effect of protecting children.
> »Let there be no doubt: we will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees. This proposal--if passed and enforced against us--would require us to make this choice. It's surveillance wine in safety bottles. To be clear--we will stay to the end. We stand with the people in Europe & their right to privacy, whatever the Commission does. But we won't comply with any mandate to undermine our privacy guarantees. And noncompliance would result in our being barred from the market.«
Today I discovered that you can only edit a #signal message a maximum of ten times. I had been keeping a record of a series of events over a number of days and adding new info as it happened, hoping to be able to send a single message at the end, but it finally refused to commit an edit saying ten edits is the max.
> On November 16th, Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal, published a detailed breakdown of the popular encrypted messaging app’s running costs for the very first time. The unprecedented disclosure’s motivation was simple - the platform is rapidly running out of money, and in dire need of donations to stay afloat.
Today my wife could not send messages because Signal has implemented captchas, and the captcha failed. Nothing would send without passing the captcha. The message was being sent to another Signal user who she's messaged before and is in her contacts. It was urgent, and she had to send via SMS to get the message through.
The "feature" and "safety" creep has turned Signal into something that doesn't do its only job. They would sacrifice function for the sake of treating us like spammers. You'd also think the years of metadata they have would be enough to get us on the "not spam" list.
We were already using other apps as our primary messengers, but this is really the final nail in the coffin.
Another week, another attempt to transfer my #Signal messages to a new iPhone.
I've got 30GB of data (reason: 3 years of baby photos + videos shared with family members 😅) and the estimated transfer time is 27 HOURS.
The 2 phones (old & new) need to be near each other, touching, with the Signal app open, for the entirety of the transfer. I've failed previous transfers by doing something as simple as turning off an alarm, ugh.
So I need to use a THIRD phone while this happens. Wish me luck!
"There are two major benefits to using Signal. First, the messages are end-to-end encrypted, which means that Signal (the company) does not have access to them. Only you and the person on the other end can access the messages. This makes Signal different from texting and social media. Second, while you need a phone number to make an account, following a recent update, it is now possible to withhold your phone number from the people you message. This is very important for those who prefer to remain anonymous, because your phone number can be used to connect your messages to you." https://crimethinc.com/2024/05/27/the-sunbird-how-to-start-an-announcements-only-thread-on-signal-and-how-organizers-in-austin-used-one-to-coordinate-solidarity-with-palestine#Signal@Mer__edith
Every year this gets called into question, yet rarely is the full story ever told. In this video, Josh explains what's really happening with these privacy and security apps as well as how it affects YOU directly.
A verybinterestin conversation with Meredith Whittaker, the head of Signal, the well known encrypted messaging app.
' I don’t think we can have a conversation about disinformation without having a conversation about the role of massive homogenous platforms that have cannibalized our media ecosystem and our information ecosystem in service of profit and growth for a handful of companies [TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X and YouTube]. '
I would recommend looking at this site. My personal recommendation would be simplex chat. It’s decentralized, doesn’t require a phone number and supports forward secrecy.
so tired of #signal app. How can I criticize it when I’ve never used it I would like to use it. I would like to use it very much. However I don’t own a smart phone. Which means I can’t register a desktop app which intern means I can’t use signal as even trying to create a virtual I machine running, android to download the mobile app to register my desktop app. Which failed. I don’t care how much you improve it until you’re actually inclusive. Signal is not a good app. You might also want to think about who are the people they don’t have access to their own smart phone. Think about other ways for users to register without a smart phone please. (running macos desktop)
the signal company does not like poor people to have access to good cryptography tools. many people who do not have smart phones are not as privileged as western developers.
lack of support for operating systems that are outside of the corporate two (iOS and Android). again lack of diversity makes signal lass available to those outside the mainstream.
Signalapp does not support clients that are not made by signal. again reduces the accessibility to those outside the mainstream.
if you care about secure communications i would think that you would care to have it available for all and not just those with more resources. adding the ability to not need a smartphone to use signal would make it accessible and much more secure. right now the easiest workaround is to borrow some ones smartphone. not so secure.
all the posts about how signal is so amazing read very tone def when many cant use it. @eliasr@ti@nieral@tzafrir

Because it costs so much money to create and run AI models, tech companies will inevitably try to pay for them by selling our personal information, says Signal’s CEO #signal#ai#privacy
I've just started transferring about 25 GB of #Signal data between my two iPhones (old → new)... which means they need to stay near each other, with Signal open, for the entirety of the transfer. I can't use either of them.
So I'll have a Google Pixel 4a as my main phone today. And! Since I can't use #Ivory or #IceCubes, I've just downloaded #Tusky. About to take it for a spin. Curious to see what the #Mastodon experience is like on #Android
What's the best messaging platform?
