SmartHome is when you vacuum decides when it’s time to leave.

It just started vacuuming ignoring that I’m still at home. Turns out that HomeKit thought that I left when I only moved between rooms 🤦🏼‍♂️😂

Good morning yet again!

Today I found out my thermostat hasn't been working because of an ISP outage in the area. While I am all for , this one takes the cake for me; how can people be expected to have functioning smart houses if they keep prioritising internet leeches (such as "self-hosters") over actual customers, overloading their networks?

I'm on the phone with my provider right now, the waiting times might take a while, but this is something that's gotta be said.

So Roombas suck and cannot navigate my house because they use cameras not LIDAR (did Elon Musk design this shit?)

So what is the best Robot Vacuum that like, actually works? I have cheapo iHomes and honestly the iHome AutoVac Nova Pro is acceptable. The older one can't navigate well and forgets the map often though

🔔 One great when working with notifications:

Clear them as soon as the state changes. https://companion.home-assistant.io/docs/notifications/notifications-basic#clearing

For instance, if you get a notification when the washing machine is done, clear it when someone opens the machine door. This avoids unnecessary noise for other Homers!

Is there any way to change the easing of a transition?

I would like to fade out the kitchen lights but if it's longer than 3 seconds it looks for at least one second that nothing happened. I would like to go pretty fast to about 50% and the remaining time can go much slower. 🤔

I’m happy to see more automation-friendly smart home stuff, but I went down the rabbit hole this year and am not tempted to look back. 😅

People out there,

I see many people automating stuff I consider normal, such as closing windows shutters or turning on and off lights at a certain time or by using their phone.

I think these activities are normal and fine in a house. Yes, I like to open and close the shutters manually and turn on the light by using the switch on the wall.

So, which useful automations do you have in your home?

Just finished rewriting my automations to use trigger IDs and Choose actions, reducing my Automations by half. Thank you @homeassistant for such an awesome tool!

My UPS finally had its first power outage. I’m such a proud UPS dad. ☺️

It’s funny to think that for the last 20 years I’ve just stuck with redundancy and hoped for the best with power and keeping my drives alive.

Despite working in the electronics field, I never really got into #smarthome stuff. But lately I have been trying out #homeassistant and was excited that a friend from Chicago Meetups, @kbx81, has been working at #NabuCasa on the #esphome project.

I spoke with Keith about how to get started as a beginner in the field, but then also how to put some custom electronics to work in a #homeautomation context. I was impressed with how fast I could add a #zigbee device to my HA

IF I were paying for electricity for charging my it would still be less than half the cost to fuel my old hybrid (which got 50 mpg), but I only charge on sunny days and I make sure the draw by the charger doesn’t exceed the energy of the panels. Benefits of a setup for the and the EV charger. Thank you Ra, Sun God, whose existence I now believe in because you almighty Ra fuel my trips to Starbucks.

I wanted to do the smart house thingy that I see everyone else do. My Internet connection is unstable, it turns out, so while trying to make my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I realised I couldn't turn on the lights.

My reliance on tech companies ends here and now.

#HomeAssistant shows a lot of promise for #SmartHome integration across manufacturers, but right now, there is still an awful lot of Fucking About™ required to make things happen.

I'm trying to integrate something and the bit that's required before I set the integration up requires SSH, an additional interface element (HACS), and an installation sequence, accompanied by clearing browser cache, that does not easily seem to work.

I'm as keen as the next geek to mess with stuff under the hood, but this is pretty much deep nerd only territory.
