I finally decided for a new daily driver laptop. I wanted something from a small manufacturer focused on . Looked at devices from , , , . At the end I decided for the Pulse 14 from @tuxedocomputers. It looks almost perfect for me. The only downside is that they don‘t ship with US-ANSI keyboards. I‘m afraid this will annoy me the first few week… Anyways, looking forward for the device to arrive in order to install .

Thinkpads with are now supposed to be available from in various European countries. Apparently the Netherlands is - just like two years ago - not one of these: Searching for Fedora on the Dutch Lenovo website returns exactly one , but in its configuration options it says that it comes with M$ Wind*ws! Fedora isn't mentioned anywhere. Such a shame!

Btw notice the amazing of € 0.01 that you get using the !

mw,

I love , and also ! sell great machines, but importing one would mean a 21% VAT price surcharge.

Currently still very happy with my (Gen 1, AMD). At the time, ordering without an OS wasn't possible, so I settled for M$ Wind*ws, which I immediately replaced with . From the ordering & payment procedure I got the impression that didn't really want to sell anything to me at all. Delivery took 8 weeks.

Have you heard of Star Labs?

They’re an indie computer co from the UK who make high-end hardware designed specifically for Linux. I collaborated w/them while at elementary, and they’ve been putting out great kit since, too:

• StarBook, 14" pro laptop
• StarLite, 12.5" convertible tablet
• StarFighter, 16" no-holds-barred powerhouse laptop

They test everything on a variety of Linux distros, provide open firmware, and financially support many distros.

Be careful ordering the new from Systems.

If their system declines your credit card, it still places a pre-authorisation for the full amount into your bank account – thereby reducing the balance of your account for the full amount. The authorisation is for a whole month and so you cannot touch that money for a month.

I called and spoke with them and they told me there’s nothing they can do on their end and my bank won’t investigate unless they take the money.

Right, so I just put in an order, selected their invoice option at checkout and was able to transfer them the money via IBAN in seconds. Wish I’d done that from the start.

Phew! That was way harder than it needed to be.

(Again, I’ll update you all if/when they get back to me let me know the issue with failed transactions resulting in preauthorisations is fixed. Until then, if you’re going to pre-order the , I’d highly recommend you pay by invoice.)

So, after all that, I’m back to being very excited about my early(ish) birthday present (it doesn’t ship for another two months).

I have some very neat plans for this little tablet… hehehe!

I am of the opinion that if we keep waiting for the “perfect” tablet, it will never exist. The specs of the are head and shoulders above any other Linux-dedicated thus far.

I plan on purchasing one once I see a product review, and if it’s as good as I hope it will be, I hope that Linux users will support it with their WALLETS so we get more and better devices like this.

Looks like StarLabs turned their affordable entry level laptop into an entry level tablet / Surface like device!

Looks pretty good for a Linux tablet!

Yay, just received my Kitten stickers. If you’re in Paris for NewCrafts this week, make sure you ask me for one :)

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

Haha, the new Kitten stickers are pretty small so they don’t cover the StarLabs logo on my laptop and so is born the Kitten unicorn :)

(Very different to those other unicorns you hear about.)

Photo of black laptop lid with Kitten’s head sticker with one of the points from the original logo sticking out the middle of it, making it look like a unicorn.
