I finally decided for a new daily driver laptop. I wanted something from a small manufacturer focused on #linux. Looked at devices from #StarLabs, #Purism, #System76, #Slimbook. At the end I decided for the Pulse 14 from @tuxedocomputers. It looks almost perfect for me. The only downside is that they don‘t ship with US-ANSI keyboards. I‘m afraid this will annoy me the first few week… Anyways, looking forward for the device to arrive in order to install #NixOS.
SCaLE 21x attendees, if you visit the Fedora booth you will have an opportunity to see the Fedora Slimbook 14"! We've heard great feedback, so be sure to check it out.

It was actually easier than expected to get everything up and running: probably 30-40 minutes until everything was properly working/pretty due to hidpi. Also found out about @tokodon as well!
Some stranger dev stuff might need chroot/containers but nothing extraordinary. #Flatpak also working nice.

Our project leader @mattdm took the Fedora Slimbook 14" to our booth at FOSDEM this year. It was a great time and the laptop got lots of positive feedback! Thanks again to @slimbook for the unit. :)
While many of us would love the $1500 laptop with all the bells and whistles, it's important to have more affordable Linux devices to make them more accessible.
@slimbook has their Elemental line of mid-range laptops to do just that. And you can buy them with Fedora preinstalled!
I need a recommendation.
I am officially getting my grandma a Linux Laptop, as she inadvertently damaged her MacBook Air (those things just do NOT like tea!!)
My budget is just shy of 1,000 USD, and I'd ideally like to stay within half of that.
I'd also like to keep something about as light as the MBA, and not smaller than a 13.3" screen.
I was thinking of getting a used (probably five year old) Thinkpad X1 Carbon, but I'm not sure how rugged they are compared to the old fashioned Thinkpads.
My other thought was one of the more affordable #Slimbook options, but I'm worried about shipping time/cost and support all the way from Spain. (Although, of course, I don't expect any support for a 5-year-old used Lenovo. XD
I'm also considering #VanillaOS as the distro, because I want something as safe and basic as possible. My grandma is 103. Yeah. 103.
Thinkpads with #Fedora#linux are now supposed to be available from #Lenovo in various European countries. Apparently the Netherlands is - just like two years ago - not one of these: Searching for Fedora on the Dutch Lenovo website returns exactly one#laptop, but in its configuration options it says that it comes with M$ Wind*ws! Fedora isn't mentioned anywhere. Such a shame!
Currently still very happy with my #Thinkpad#T14 (Gen 1, AMD). At the time, ordering without an OS wasn't possible, so I settled for M$ Wind*ws, which I immediately replaced with #Fedora. From the ordering & payment procedure I got the impression that #Lenovo didn't really want to sell anything to me at all. Delivery took 8 weeks.
Alrighty, we got a few neat things to share today.
First, welcome @ultramarine to the Fediverse! They are a Fedora-based distro similar to Nobara. They aim to be an (even more) 'just works' type of distro, so check them out and give them a follow! (1/3)

Some companies have options that come with Fedora preinstalled like @slimbook (Fedora Slimbooks 16" and 14", as well as other models) and Lenovo (ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 and more). @frameworkcomputer also official supports Fedora. ❤️
Just announced at the Fedora 39 Release Party: Fedora Slimbook 14"!
@slimbook has responded to the feedback from the community regarding the first Fedora Slimbook, so they've provided a new laptop to live alongside the first! We now have the original Fedora Slimbook 16" and the new Fedora Slimbook 14". ❤️
