What would you do in this situation? 🤔

@itsfoss What's wrong with from ? Is it because of Snap in Ubuntu? I feel like Snap isn't really that bad, don't hate too much because of Snap in Ubuntu. Because there are still many superior aspects of Ubuntu and its variants. Ubuntu and other variants remain the best Linux for me 👍🏼

Now, I need to get rid of as well, despite having invested (too) much effort. 😞

    Wondering if I should switch from Mozilla's VPN to Proton's VPN.

    Mozilla works flawlessly on Android and Linux desktop, but was a bit of a pain to configure on the CLI.

    Anyone have strong feelings about and their ?

    (Not interested in any other providers, thanks. Yes, I understand the limits of what a VPN can do. No, I don't need to to work on Mac, Windows, or iOS. Yes, your joke reply is very funny. No, I don't want to run my own.)

    @Edent One word of warning: I run and when running ProtonVPN from the command line it worked fine but sometimes would not kill the process properly after reboot which messed with network-manager & screwed up my internet connection. I fixed it but something to be aware of.

    What process/solution do you recommend to your Windows-using parents?

    publicvoit,
    @publicvoit@graz.social avatar

    @rumpel . SCNR.

    I've never reduced maintenance effort as much as when I moved all computers to . They actually didn't notice much difference anyway. 🤷

    And their hardware doesn't have to be replaced that often any more.

    Want to turn Ubuntu into a rolling release?

    sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

    Replace the development's code name with:

    devel

    The code name will vary depending on what copy of Ubuntu you're using

    For example, Ubuntu 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur) is shortened to "mantic" while Ubuntu 23.04 (Lunar Lobster) is shortened to "lunar"

    sudo apt update

    sudo apt dist-upgrade

    sudo apt autoremove

    sudo reboot

    This places you on the developer branch. -- Use with caution

    Regarding your LUKS password issue. Could it be that you are using a LVM block (?) on the machine where you have to type in the password once?
    And on the other host you have to decrypt ever single partition?

    I think i have the latter case on my guix setup, which u did manually. The former on my NixOS hosts per installer.

    This weekend I re-installed my business notebook with .

    I guess I'll write a blog article about my NixOS adventure some day.

    Sneak preview: not everything is great when you migrate from decades of deb-based distros to NixOS. Things that work OOTB with normal distros can consume hours to debug for me. 😔

    Let's see about the long-term aspects.

    At least this concludes my era for good. Only one Debian stable left (that'll be a hard nut to crack) besides my two new NixOS hosts.
