I know I used to know folks at GoDaddy, so is there anyone following who could help get tdor.info restored as the website for trans day of remembrance?
Today we read of the names of trans folks who have died due to anti-trans violence in the past year. The number of names has been growing significantly these past few years.
Among those names we will read today is Caitlyn. She was a member of my local trans community. She was 19.
I posted this on FB but an anti-trans hate speech account comment- and laugh emoji- bombed it. Sigh.
Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor those lost to anti-transgender violence. Started in 1999 to commemorate the lives of Rita Hester and Chanelle Pickett, TDOR reminds us of the ongoing struggle against transphobia. Let's stand in solidarity, remember the lives lost, and strive for a world that respects and protects all.
The trans community has two days that it marks during the year. One is Trans Day of Visibility (March 31st) and the second, Trans Day of Remembrance (Nov 20th)
Basically they’re to say:
“Hey! We exist. We deserve rights.”
and
“Please stop murdering us.”
"Book of Our Names" is like a gospel hymn for the sacredness of trans lives. It is hard not to see it both as about the ritual so many of us perform on TDOR every year, the reading of names and a candlelight vigil, and as a call to faith that we will endure and overcome.
Give yourself a few minutes today to just listen and feel this song.
I'm going to spend the evening alone, remembering beautiful friends who are gone forever. Lost to overt violence, and to the quieter violence of bigotry.
If you haven't lost anyone to this, you are blessed. If you are moved to reflect, then reflect on the fact that my people's most recognizable event is a day of mourning for our dead.
This #TransDayOfRemembrance we want to come at you with facts. Let’s leave no room for confusion:
-Between 2017 and 2022, an average of 350 trans people were murdered every single year
-trans people are 4 times more likely to experience violence and abuse compared to cis people
-Violence against trans people is rising, not getting better
-Many of these statistics are likely to be higher due to ambiguity around gender identity, and a lack of reporting crimes
Digital violence against #trans people and the #HumanRightsDefenders working to protect their #HumanRights is skyrocketing. It fuels hate against trans people in our societies.
Today, trans people worldwide gather to remember those we have lost to violence and discrimination in their many forms during the past year.
Here in #Bournemouth we will be meeting for our own TDoR candelight vigil at 6pm. Please spare a thought for those doing the same in your own village, town or city.
