Opinion

On apartheid Israel

When apartheid South Africa came under growing international pressure at the UN, the General Assembly initiated boycotts.

It suspended South Africa, stripping it of its Member State rights & privileges.

The apartheid regime "could no longer be seated, speak or vote at the General Assembly & other UN organs.

"Apartheid South Africa changed course because it became a pariah & isolated regime"

We've been here before:

In the 1980s, Reagan & Thatcher followed a policy of 'constructive engagement' with apartheid South Africa & vetoed UN economic sanctions on the regime.

Both saw "South Africa as a bastion against Marxist forces in Southern Africa. Thatcher declared the ANC a terrorist organisation."

I suspect the upcoming Labour government in Britain will have the same basic problem our Labor government has in Australia – that it's far too timid for its own good.

Keir Starmer’s ‘first steps’ might get him into Downing Street. But there is danger ahead

I've been listening to the second half of The Rest Is Politics interview with , and my take away is what TRIVIAL people everyone involved is. Kwarteng is supposed to be one of the intellects of the party, but they can none of them – not Kwarteng, not Campbell, not even Stewart – string two concepts together.

Leading: 74. Kwasi Kwarteng: Liz Truss, becoming Chancellor, and Britain on the brink (Part 2)

At the end of the interview, Stewart sums up by saying "you get the sense that [] is very clever". I didn't. I got the sense that he was rather stupid, rather shallow, rather trivial; but very posh.

And I think that the problem at the heart of UK parliamentary politics is that they mistake a posh accent for intelligence.

His pledges are the most pathetic I've seen from him yet.

6500 teachers? So enough for 1 teacher per 2 schools. Yeah, that'll solve the recruitment and retention crisis.

40,000 more appointments per week? That's less than 40 per hospital.

Sticking to tough spending rules? Rules that have consistently been shown to not work? Great stuff.

He's not exactly setting out a bold vision, is he?
