In later Oz books by L. Frank Baum, the Scarecrow moves in with the Tin Woodman, staying at the Tin Woodman's castle in Winkie Country. Sometimes they go off on separate adventures, but that's mainly so that they can later experience the joy of being reunited. #WyrdWednesday#BookChatWeekly
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and W. W. Denton (1900) is one of maybe a dozen books I've re-read so many times over the course of my life that I've forgotten just how many times. It for all its flaws is a quintessentially American fantasy novel, especially when taken in context with the later Oz books.
The multimillion-copy bestselling story of Wicked comes full circle in The Witch of Maracoor, the final installment of Gregory Maguire’s Another Day series.
(note: fertilisers are made from burning #fossilFuels, when #SriLanka rejected artificial fertilisers recently it was reported that yeilds were reduced by 18%, which is not as bad as #BigAg would have us believe)
Today in Labor History August 11, 1894: Federal troops drove over 1,000 jobless workers from the nation's capital. Led by Charles "Hobo" Kelley, an unemployed activist from California, and Jacob Coxey, they camped in Washington D.C. starting in July. Kelley's Hobo Army included a young journalist named Jack London and a young miner-cowboy named Big Bill Haywood. Frank Baum was an observer of the protest and some say it influenced his Wizard of Oz, with the Scarecrow representing the American farmer, the tin man representing industrial workers and the Cowardly Lion representing William Jennings Bryan, all marching on Washington (Oz) to demand redress from the president (the Wizard). 650 miners, led by a "General" Hogan, captured a Northern Pacific train at Butte, Montana, en route to the protest. The Feds caught up with them at Billings, forcing a surrender, but a few eventually made it to Washington.
Wanted to talk about some of my favourite indie games that really inspired or impacted me through my years of gaming (still do), and I never see ppl talk about -
Dominique Pamplemousse - It's all Over When The Fat Lady Sings
Off-beat comedy, handmade, unique art-style, society commentary, musical, gender exploration - I backed Squinky on IndieGoGo when this first was announced and I still love and replay this regularly.
It's the kind of unique view and creativity I desperately want to see more of, and love experiencing. One day I'd too hope to leave the world with something like this
There's also a sequel and another exploratory game by Squinky that's worth playing too, and only 1$ https://squinky.itch.io/

Wadjet Eye games is in no way a small indie, or not well-known anymore. But my introduction to his work was actually Emerald City Confidential, and that is a game I never see ppl mention, not even him. (I think it might be the one and only contracted work he's made?)
This game made a deep impact on me, and is probably the catalyst for my interest in neo-noir.
I adore the world-building, the darker fairy-tale twist (no longer unique, but was not as mainstream back in 2009) and the strong political commentary.
The gameplay isn't perfect, but I have not seen anything else at the intersection between fairy-tale, neo-noir and strong commentary pull off this level of world-building.
Well now. It looks like Bluesky will have to deal with their Jack Dorsey issue sooner rather than later, after his recent history with promoting anti-vaccination crank RFK Jr. came to wider attention, because this isn’t just some harmless billionaire obsession, they’re literally killing people, bringing back diseases that were almost wiped out like measles.
Bluesky members are not happy and some are calling for Dorsey to be thrown off the Bluesky board.
