Pause to reflect on the controls of Defender, recognized as totally bananas in 1981, let alone today.
A 2D game where you move your ship up/down/left/right, except:
Moving up and down is easy - that's what the joystick does. But that's all! It’s a one-dimensional lever.
Moving left or right is… less easy. The Thrust button pushes you in the direction you're facing. To turn around, slap Reverse, and your entire POV on the playfield flips around the Y axis. Haha! https://social.pincade.com.au/@Dozer/112564302485875090
Discovered its hard to think about game title screens without humming the Jack Dragon theme from indie developer @TeaMonsterGames
If I'm being polite I'd call it cheery and catchy 😁
Something I never thought I'd see, an animated series for one of my favorite games, Golden Axe. And on.. Comedy Central? 😂 Intrigued and psyched to see this.
This past weekend, we stopped at a tiny arcade at the hotel I stayed at with the family. They have one of the two greatest arcade games of all time - Ms. Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat II.
Don't argue with me...that's totally a fact.
Regardless, as the main screens cycled through I took this picture. There was a screen that showed up with details on how to order the soundtrack as well as two different Mortal Kombat comic books back when this dropped in 1993.
I wonder...do you think that's still valid? And if not, do you think there's folks out there who still have copies of these comics / the CD? Cause...I kind of want them.
Also, who stood around in an arcade in 1993 with a pen and paper to write down all this information? Cause I want to meet those people too...
Researching for a blog post and ran across my favorite game ever, Centipede, archived fully 10 years ago at the Internet Archive. Via the 'Internet Arcade'. Love it. And it loads up in MAME. Rad.
“Arcade” of ancient mancala game boards carved on rocks found in Kenya’s highlands
Veronica Waweru, an archaeologist from Yale University, has unearthed an “arcade” of rock-cut Mancala game boards in Kenya’s highlands.
Mancala, derived from the Arabic word “Naqala,” meaning “to move,” is a turn-based strategy game where the goal is to capture more gaming pieces than the opponent...
Since I had the day off I finally got around to setting up DoDonPachi Daioujou Re: Incarnation in TATE mode. It took me awhile to figure out where the screen options are... :blobfoxfacepalm:
Anyway! I've played DDP DOJ via PS2 emulation (not recommended) and the actual arcade version when there was a Round 1 in Tauton (which has since closed; it was one of two underperforming locations and never reopened after the covid lockdown.) I never made it past Stage 3. 🥹
I'm not the sort to do exhaustive comparisons and there are already several in-depth reviews for Re:Incarnation; in terms of port quality it is by far the best version available. The arrange modes are
The SuperEasy mode is easier than any other M2 SuperEasy port, but the chain system is identical to the standard modes, so it's pretty clear the mode's meant to serve as an introduction to the (in)famous chain scoring that makes the series so difficult. I think it also creates a nicely gradiated difficulty curve from beginner (SuperEasy/Luna Tour), intermediate (the character-based Arrange Modes), and experienced (arcade, white/black labels).
Really the only con I'm dealing with is having to use the joycons....I would literally prefer any other kind of controller but my Switch options are limited :( #shmups#arcadegames#dodonpachidaioujou#nintendoswitch
Took the kids to Melbourne Museum today to see 'Relics', a temporary exhibition depicting a post-apocalyptic world where LEGO minifigs have risen from the debris to craft new civilisations in discarded human artefacts.
I have to say that this repurposed old Space Invaders cab certainly caught my eye.
Cheap coffee table to not so cheap to build but quite awesome arcade cocktail table. Took ages to finish. Running an old I7 alienware x51 with a 1080TI. PC route so i can run ps2 emulation, modern stuff. Font on the panel for the power button and usb cluster is taken from attack of the mutant camels and the game running is sheep in space. One of my first games from back in the day and one of my all time c64 favourites. Both by @llamasoft_ox
Had an amazing time - as it is every time - at Arcade Club in Bury tonight! Four floors of arcade machines old and new, consoles, PCs, and stuff like pop-a-shot and air hockey. Had a laugh when my man Peter said more than once "I'm sure the graphics on <insert game> looked better than this!" Nah, we've just seen so much in the last thirty-plus years that the old state-of-the art is primitive to us - plus, we were kids then 🙂 #gaming#arcadegames#BlackMastodon#BlackFedi
CBI image of the day is of women working on binding wires together, following a schematic on paper pinned to the work surface as part of the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) air defense system. The processing power for SAGE was driven by the IBM AN/FSQ-7. #IBM@histodons@sociology@anthroplogy
@psychicparrot42 having played #JackDragon it is an absolute joy! It handles tightly like similar games before it, but Jack Dragon has a style all its own. My friend tried it & wants to know when its out. Its one of those 'a minute to learn, a lifetime to master' kind of games that everyone likes straight away. A technical marvel & charming in its presentation - though with Halloween on the way I'm curious to see Jack take down Money Bags #MortalKombat style.
Here is a sketch by our friend Dude! What do you think of it? As soon as I can I will refine it and start 3D modeling it, that's right, I want to 3D print it!
The sprites are all ready! Now it's time to start making the level and puzzle designs! Making a game for NES is proving to be a complex but at the same time magnificent experience!
