Good (and very long) response by Mike Masnick to Jack Dorsey's interview about : https://www.techdirt.com/2024/05/13/bluesky-is-building-the-decentralized-social-media-jack-dorsey-wants-even-if-he-doesnt-realize-it/

"Bluesky has continued to build exactly what he has wanted. And it’s almost exactly what Jay promised when she interviewed for the job. I know this because, at Jack and Parag’s request, I sat in on a bunch of the interviews of the various people they were considering to lead Bluesky to provide feedback. And Jay’s pitch matches extraordinarily closely to what Bluesky has become"

Good morning everyone!

I'm enjoying more and more every day. Compared to , which only provides a limited amount of features, this instance has granular control of the algorithmic impact of my own posts, explicit opt-in read receipts, and even mini-picture reactions! (I'm still holding out for support)

The biggest social media transformation is happening in our lives right now, and we shouldn't waste it on inferior platforms who are holding out features and ignoring their principles.

I hope that this trend continues to push out industry forward into making better software, for humans!

Love,

@wjmaggos nostr is not a bad project, but it's still using instances's just calling them relays and not promoting the community side of this. The conversations around this are not the best. People argue that and are both spoilers on there is some truth to this, though am more they are all and diversity is good, but please be honest path.

Interesting interview with Jack Dorsey. Why he left , the relationship with Twitter and what he thinks about .

Where I agree with him: The importance of identity handling and the need to divide (commercial) platform and protocol.

Bluesky enthusiasts are stating that Bluesky has ”plans” to make ATProto universal and transfer it to W3C or the like. Well, there is no evidence that Bluesky wants to give up control or the protocol is going to be widely adopted after 5 years of development so forgive me being sceptical. The story is a bit different with ActivityPub.

The is great from the Fediverse side, but the side is still missing a lot. Posts longer than the limit just get truncated; wouldn't a Read More link be better? And self-replies don't seem to get bridged at all, so threads don't work.

Jack Dorsey is furious that has attracted "very very common" people. He also doesn't like the idea of moderation tools facilitating the banning of racists.

All these tech billionaires are like a version of the movie Big, in which a pre-adolescent boy wakes up in the body of an aging Howard Hughes. Or Colonel Kurtz. Or a sardine.

The whole idea of BlueSky supporting nomadic identities but the rest of the ActivityPub (plus other stuff) Fediverse being unable to do so is such an oversold idea.

A new service using ActivityPub behind the scenes (and not the AT Protocol) can absolutely support nomadic identities, even if the service doesn't treat a whole website as the actor.

It will still use did:plc, same as AT Protocol (BlueSky), but once done so, an application that understands how to work with did:plc can dereference an actor based on the DID.

That said, an existing service will simply not be compatible with this idea, without changing how it operates.

So, Jack Dorsey gave an interview about why he gave up on , and apparently it's mostly that they… started doing moderation? 🤨

Yes, they sometimes take down accounts that are breaking ToS, e.g. harassing others. No, I don't think it's a bad thing.

Now that more parts of the federation and user-controlled moderation tools are ready, you can post from your own PDS and you won't be censored unless you, like, post CSAM or sth… (and we do want to censor that, right?)
