Former CEO of Twitter wanted to build a social protocol no-one can control, like SMTP or HTTP for social media. Bluesky’s ATProto was supposed to be an open source protocol that Twitter could eventually utilize, but then Musk happened and Bluesky started taking it to the wrong direction and everything fell apart in Dorsey’s mind.
A very revealing interview. I now see even more future in W3C’s ActivityPub.
This noob is testing the interconnectivity of the #Fediverse:
The word out there on the Fediverse make it seem as if all the different tools (Mastdn/P-tube/Lemmy/etc.) can interact with one another. But this is not the case, as some work both ways, whilst others only one way, or at all.
a) Using #Bridgyfed, to test between AT ( #BlueSky ) & AP protocols (Mastodon, etc.)
b) Meta's #Threads for testing with Mastodon.
c) Starting to test #Nostr with its peer-to-peer network.
TL;DR:
The #Fediverse holds a lot of promise, but it the ideal level of interconnectivity isn't there yet. (And yes, not all of them need to be able to connect and interact on the same level of details as with the others, as they are different tools.)
Jack Dorsey interview post-#Bluesky. Whatever you think of him, his views on why he helped getting Bluesky started in the first place are interesting. I wonder which of those might apply to the Fediverse (which he doesn't mention at all).
A lot more happening #Eurovision-wise on #Bluesky than here, upon a quick look. And I can't really gather the activity at #Threads since there's NO way I can display most recent activity, even if not sorted by time 🤦♂️ so idk where to keep posting on Saturday 😕
I think the next sea change of behavior will be when @Mastodon, #bluesky and @threads are bridged, and a Groups protocol matures. They will provide a kind of selectivity of topic, qualifications, and behavior. People are welcome to lurk, but what and how they engage will drive popularity.
The #BlueskyBridge by Snarfed was soft-launched this week - still very alpha and a lot of things don't work, but posts are starting to come through both ways 🙂
Right now you need to follow the bridge to get bridged (the DM-request mechanism isn't finished yet). I'm tracking the bridged accounts (M->B) here: https://blue.mackuba.eu/directory/fedi
So #Bluesky is implementing an (unspecified) new protocol for direct messages. Because AtProto is really not suitable for anything that isn't 100% public.
I wonder whether they can do this now that Jack is off the board. But maintaining two separate protocols in the same app? Who knows, maybe #ActivityPub is next?
#Bridgy became quietly available for people to test, but as bridged posts started to appear, other people became aware and more people started to test and use the bridge.
To make your fediverse account available in Bluesky, you’ll have to follow this account: @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy
Testing the Fediverse's interconnectivity between apps and protocols
One thing that would have been nice to know as a newbie on the Fediverse:...
