Fixing the global childhood obesity epidemic begins with making healthy choices the easier choices – and that requires new laws and policies (theconversation.com)

Obese children outnumber underweight ones globally, and ‘social determinants’ in kids’ lived environments play a fundamental role. Obesity in kids can lead to a lifetime of poor health.

Song of the Day .. for all its melancholic, summery first love heartbreak loveliness. I really like her use of lower register in this track. So pretty.

This is a B side .. the A side, Heart Burn is also great (oh those 80s synths.)

Remembering how at age 4, I liked my friend Eric's sweater. I asked him if I could wear it and he said I could not. So I told him, "Eric, when you die, I'm going to wear that sweater."

I think I was respecting his consent? 😆

Eric, if you're out there, I'm sorry

Which American city is best for raising free children?

@citylife

With 90s-and-earlier style independence. Could it be Salt Lake City? Inspired by this:

"Utah Free Range Parenting Law [...] says that letting your kids play outside, walk to school, wait briefly in the car (under some circumstances) or come home with a latchkey is not neglect unless something else seriously bad is going on."

"I still read Paddington when I need to believe, as Michael Bond does, that the world's miracles are more powerful than its chaos," says English children's fiction author Katherine Rundell in this extract from "Why You Should Read Children's Books, Even Though You are so Old and Wise." Do you ever read or reread kids' books as an adult? Tell us in the comments about your childhood favorites.

When I was 9 yrs old I went to this event at a park with music and games. A local radio station was there, offering prizes to people. If you could throw X number of frisbees through this hula hoop you could choose a record from their stash. I won.

It was my first experience choosing my own music. I saw Billy Squier’s “Emotion in Motion.” It was brightly colored so I took it home and put it on our record player. It was my gateway to a lifetime passion of music.

It was breezy last Monday, so someone thought to fly a kite. Which brings me to a random thought: I never learned to fly one, and that's my frustration.

What's yours?

*As a child animals always brought me joy! I grew up with all of your typical farm buddies. But the some were special. The first thing I did when we got our homestead was find some goats! One of my current babies on the right. Chino.

A lot circulating on Facebook about the innocence of children. I agree that children's innocence should be protected. They shouldn't have to worry about getting shot at school, for instance. Or see animals killed. Or told that the way that they intrinsically are is bad, or shameful, or inferior in status to other humans. Sexual predation upon children under cover of religion also needs to stop.

I think it is profoundly important to understand why we play pretend as children. We deliberately engage with our consciousness in ways that we do not later on in life. Yet, as children our instinct is to play pretend - to press buttons in our minds and see what happens. Surely there must be something about this particular skill which is engrained in us in an evolutionary way the same way lion cubs pounce or bear cubs wrestle.

It must have been Christmas '78 based on family events I remember going on about that time. What I remember most is that the adults in the family were probably more crazy than me or my cousins. At my grandmother's house a few days after Christmas my Dad and his siblings ran the batteries down in the evening and someone went out in the dark to find new batteries. I think they went through more than one set that night. LOL
