This writing really changed the way I see accessibility features. It's not gonna tell you to use alt-text or how to go about writing it. Rather, it reframes the discussion of inclusivity and accessibility around a deafblind life, the shortcomings of assimilationist accessibility, and how deafblind folks have forged their own path in their communications.

Silti joka kerta, kun viranomaiset tai hoitavat tahot tyrkyttävät luettavakseni pienitekstistä sisältöä ja jotkut yrittävät "helpottaa" tilannetta kääntämällä heidän omaa tietokoneen näyttöä minulle ja osoittavat sormella tekstiä.
Joka kerta joudun sanomaan, että 'anteeksi en voi lukea, sillä teksti on vain niin pientä ja eikä sillä ole väliä näytätkö paperilla vai sähköisenä näytölläsi jota en voi itse suurentaa'.
Lopulta he tajuavat tai sitten pyynnöstäni lukevat tekstin ääneen ja tulkki viittoo minulle, jonka olisi voinut ihan heti alussakin hoitaa ilman tätä säätämistä.

I'm sure everyone who wants to know about this already does but, just in case anyone has, particularly if #blind or #DeafBlind, been looking for a local method of converting speech to text ... Whisper is an ML model from OpenAI which allows doing that. It can be used accessibly with all screen readers on Windows. Obviously, this is great for those of us with impaired hearing, it is certainly far more accurate than any of the speech to text programs I've seen, needs no training, and can handle background noise quite well. The audio duration limits are set by your hard drive space and the amount of time you're willing to put into transcription, I've transcribed several hours of audio without difficulty, it just takes time. It's available on Windows using https://github.com/Softcatala/whisper-ctranslate2 which just seems to need python. A GPU makes it faster, but it's usable on an I5 CPU. The model is also available online at https://freesubtitles.ai though that requires payment or waiting for long periods to transcribe limited amounts of audio. I've been talking about taking Callisto to the French Quarter to do some training now it's cooled down and since Mardi Gras is in like what... 5 months? So my work interpreter-- and one of my bffs-- surprised me today with braille maps of the French Quarter and the Central Business District so I can take them on our adventure. Yes I know we have GPS but sometimes it helps me to have physical copies of things like this especially when it's spacial information. #Deafblind#braille#ServiceDog
