Well. The domain registrar I've used for years, gandi, has gone through a series of ownership changes and has drastically raised rates on #domains. Looking for a new home that is privacy-respecting.
Several of them seem to not let you run your own nameservers anymore (ugh). #gandi offered to let them run the #nameservers, let me run the primary and they run the secondary, or run it all myself. I always had them as secondary and that worked quite well. Anyone else still do this? #askfedi
I’ve been using @protonmail for nearly 7 years now and using it successfully with my custom #domains too. Such a great evolution of the product and still growing product family. Now it’s time to #share. Using my referral link gives you a #free month of #Proton#Mail Plus to get in touch a personal impression of the look and feel.
The most interesting thing to me about such a single letter domains is how Jon Postel himself kept most of them from being registered.
Apparently there are three in dotCom which are z.com, q.com and of course the current news maker X.com.
The whois replacement https://rdap.org blocks the standard Perl LWP(standard HTTP library) user agent (HTTP 403). You are supposed to write clients for their REST API though, right? #perl#rdap#domains
I have just uploaded my first #Blocked#Domains list to my account on #Mastodon. Apparently, there is a delay for server processing. Fingers crossed that I did it correctly 🤞🏻
Any #InfoSec recommendations on an affordable #whois API or other #ruby ways to get informations about #domains?
For now getting the domain age would be enough.
In concepts, manuals, prototypes and the like, it happens again and again that one uses for illustration web domains like domain com or similar. However, this can only be done safely with the following 4 domains registered and blocked by IANA since 1992:
example.com
example.net
example.org
example.edu
The German beispiel.de is not one of them, even if its owner provides it for this purpose.
I've been mostly Google Domains + Cloudflare. What is everyone else running in their homelab. Is there a better registrar I should think about moving to?
Controversial free-domains registry Freenom has lost its deal with the government of Gabon after years of abuse. The government has retaken its ccTLD and will delete as many as seven million .ga domains.
Nice, .foo domains are open for general registration now! But there's a problem! I don't need yet another domain! But still, I am trying to find a reason to register one! Clearly, I am a Domain junkie.
