At ZERO GmbH, we're managing a lot of #AMPS Nodes (see: https://zero-iee.com/en/products/). Most of them are connected to our management VPN. Each of the nodes has a unique identifier (serial no.).
We've set up an internal DNS server that resolves their serial bumber-based FQDN and returns the corresponding VPN IP address. Thus it's easy to find the correct VPN and IP address to start maintenance or troubleshooting :-)
Our requirements on a DNS Server are quite low. We could have picked THE ONE, the only, the allmighty Bind DNS server - but instead we tried something different:
Yadifa. https://www.yadifa.eu
Yadifa is a less-known DNS server implementation by EURid - the nonprofit organization that powers the .eu top level domain!
We were surprised of the simplicity of Yadifa and had our DNS Server up and running in minutes! If you're looking for an easy to configure DNS server, check it out.
The .ing and .meme #domains have their sunrise registration phase ending in about 90 minutes and enter general availability. Get 'em while they're hot!
If you have #domains hosted with #Gandi, you need to check your mail from them. They are eliminating the mailbox service at the end of this month; any domains where you were hosting email at Gandi, you need to get an email account elsewhere. #DNS
Does anyone else have a pile of unused domain names they are hording? I keep buying new ones that "I'll totally do something with" only for them to remind me yearly to renew them.
I have one coming up for renewal soon that I've turned off auto-renewal for. I must stay strong.
Sad news! ๐ข Many of our domains, hosting rare language #books have been seized some days ago. These weren't #ZLibrary mirrors but separate sub-projects. Over 15 years, we've collected unique texts in languages like Tamil, Mongolian, Catalan, Urdu. These domains hosted rare books & manuscripts, an invaluable heritage for #researches
Google has added a new TLD (top level domain), .ing -- act now, you could own the below domain! (Apologies for the use of a four letter word, it was the first thing to come to mind of "ing" words) #TLD#domains
Well. The domain registrar I've used for years, gandi, has gone through a series of ownership changes and has drastically raised rates on #domains. Looking for a new home that is privacy-respecting.
Several of them seem to not let you run your own nameservers anymore (ugh). #gandi offered to let them run the #nameservers, let me run the primary and they run the secondary, or run it all myself. I always had them as secondary and that worked quite well. Anyone else still do this? #askfedi
Iโve been using @protonmail for nearly 7 years now and using it successfully with my custom #domains too. Such a great evolution of the product and still growing product family. Now itโs time to #share. Using my referral link gives you a #free month of #Proton#Mail Plus to get in touch a personal impression of the look and feel.
A couple of years ago, I renewed most of my domains for 10 years.
Seemed like the cheapest way to do things.
Looks like #Gandi has more than DOUBLED the price of the remaining ones. So they're being transferred to #PorkBun.
@sarajw@Edent The majority of domains have a maximum renewal of 10 years. If you're at the max already you can't renew - yet. But the sooner you can - providing you have the funds of course - may prove cheaper in the long run. Domains are only going to get more expensive in the future.
Namecheap To Raise .COM and .XYZ Domain Price by 9%.
They sent me an email.
"On September 1, 2023, the domains registry for .COM and .XYZ will implement universal price increases of up to 9% for .COM renewals, and up to 9% for .XYZ renewals, registrations, and transfers."
In a blog post, they blame Verisignโs pattern of increases and say it's out of their control.
The most interesting thing to me about such a single letter domains is how Jon Postel himself kept most of them from being registered.
Apparently there are three in dotCom which are z.com, q.com and of course the current news maker X.com.
The whois replacement https://rdap.org blocks the standard Perl LWP(standard HTTP library) user agent (HTTP 403). You are supposed to write clients for their REST API though, right? #perl#rdap#domains
