"Ecologists have reoriented their field as a 'crisis discipline,' a field of study that’s not just about learning things but about saving them. We technologists need to do the same. Rewilding the internet connects and grows what people are doing across regulation, standards-setting and new ways of organizing and building infrastructure, to tell a shared story of where we want to go."
Basically, Synergy (cross-platform keyboard and mouse sharing software) once was a one-time purchase, then moved to a subscription model. They took great pains to specify the new maintenance license did not apply to existing early adopters - see email below.
And then today I get this message saying my license is about to expire !
Is it even legal to pull something like this? In any case it's not a great way to treat early adopters !
@jake4480@julienbarnoin It's a classic bitchmove / #enshittification tactic by companies. Just rename the next update to make it a new product and abandon the old (proprietary) one to effectively get rid of all "lifetime" licensees and force them to buy anew.
Remember when you used to be able to go from the main google search page straight to google maps?
Who thought it would be a good idea to remove that option? #enshittification
The #enshittification of #Vanguard is moving along. Now they're introducing a $100 fee to close your account or transfer your assets to another firm. That's some serious bullshit right there.
4 new blog posts in April. Seems I'm getting better at sharing my long(er) form thoughts :)
The workflow I now have makes it really easy too. When I have a thread here that I think deserves a blog post, I copy the link to the first toot and paste it in https://mtr.wildeboer.net where I can get a #markdown dump that I can copy/paste in my editor and work on. My blog is #jekyll based and also uses Markdown, so it is easy to do :)
@jwildeboer Last time I asked, they did not say 'a bit of CC-NC is fine' ... which doenst mean it might (currently) be tolerated.
As long as that is true, I wont go through the hassle to move there exclusively. I should look into cohosting though, so that moving is easier should a untolerable #enshittification of github pages happen.
As businesses and interest groups increasingly move to Discord, it starts to feel incredibly ripe for #enshittification.
Discord is a natural “point of capture": if you build a community there (as a user or a server owner), it's very unclear to me if you could easily migrate away to something else if it turns nasty.
And there are probably commercial incentives for Discord to change in ways that will hurt users: monetizing user data, intrusive ads, etc.
I have been thinking on this and doing what I can since I graduated 19 years ago and came to the Bay Area to find what we now call #enshittification in full swing in 2007.
To me, it was obvious, then, that it would look this ugly, now. (Everyone had starry eyes and I've always loved tech too, but it was ugly then, too.) I wish people would look for those voices from the past, who said it. Yeah, they're there. If you were there, you know someone. Ring them up for a real conversation, now. 👍🏻
I want to hack this bullshit piece of HW so badly. I mean HP what’s wrong? Why do I need a web server on a printer? Why do I need subscription for ink? Why an account for printing? The question that remains is, can doom be played on it? Or should I consider porting veilid to it? #Enshittification
