I knew that IMDb had been around a long time but TIL it predates the World Wide Web, as it was initially launched as Usenet group rec.arts.movies in 1990 and moved to the web in 1993. And it's been owned by Amazon since 1998, because of course it has 🙄
This evening's viewing: Modern Times. Been a long time since I last saw it, & while remembering the amazing & rightly famous sequence where Charlie is sucked into the cogs of the machine, I had totally forgotten about the equally amazing roller skate by the precipice scene, which still looks remarkable (the drop is in fact a glass matte painting, a clever bit of VFX for the era)
As I work today I'm listening to the soundtrack from the 1982 Conan the Barbarian film that was composed by Basil Poledouris. Things are feeling fairly barbaric at the moment here in the Arizona desert
Post-holiday Tuesday blues got you down?
Check out my latest blog post where I share some of my favorite stress-relief TV shows that have been absolute lifesavers for me. 📺
ps. Sending you virtual hugs friends! 🤗
And now, The High Note (2020), directed by Nisha Ganatra, starring Dakota Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Zoë Chao, Bill Pullman, Eddie Izzard, and Ice Cube. It's a #film about the music industry. Like most #films, it didn't make much box office during the pandemic, but I'm not going to hold that against it.
Somebody - I’ve never really got on with Miranda July’s films but this short for the Miu Miu Women’s Series is fun and enjoyable. Maybe I’ll give her features a go again. Any recommendations?
House of Tolerance - I started this months ago and got sidetracked but watched it again when it popped up on MUBI. Adele Haenel stars in this look at the lives of women in a French brothel from their point of view. It looks great, yes, but is full of searing rage and despair. In the US it was called House of Pleasure, when, mostly for the women in the film, their indentured lives are full of anything but pleasure.
Almost Entirely a Slight Disaster - A dry, droll Turkish film about your young people in the country, all of whom we see crying alone, as they face hardships. It’s funny, though; think Roy Andersson or Ali Kaurismäki.
Challengers - The trailer made me think I’d hate this film but I read lots of reviews praising it, and went in open-minded and hopeful. First off, Zendaya is good. But the characters are inanely one-dimensional, it jumps around all over the place, Trent Reznor’s techno drowns out the dialogue, and the ‘shock’ ending is telegraphed miles out. And worst of all it’s just boring. The first hour would have been a spinning-newspaper headline in a 1930s film. And it’s got tennis in it. Ha, to make the tennis interesting Guadagnino uses every cliché, making it look like the camera’s in the ball, sticking a GoPro on the racquet, and those scenes end up being laughable. TL:DR I didn’t like it.
Jack Nicholson holds the screen well enough in Sean Penn's debut as a writer director.
It's a piece of depression porn that contains all the self indulgent beats and hokey dialogue you might expect from a first timer (so much introspection!).
📽️ I discovered earlier that HISTORY OF THE OCCULT is available on #Kanopy, so I guess tonight's movie is settled.
(It's also on #Tubi for those of you who don't have Kanopy, but if you have a library card in the U.S., I beseech you to check and see if you can access their amazing library of #films.)
I finally finished Poor Things and, wouldn't you know, it grew on me. Or maybe it was just Emma Stone's amazing acting that finally reached me. There were some funny moments, some great cinematography (particularly when she and Max were walking down the lane and it showed each with the background leaves and tree kaleidoscope blurry), and even some touching moments.
While its good to see that books still hold their own (in revenue generating terms) with films & music (they outperform both), the big news is that video games generated more revenue globally than books & music combined.
As someone who has never played a video game, but reads a lot of books, I'm not sure how I feel about this... but it tells us something about where the globe's creative & receptive energies seem to be spent.
Adequate family entertainment that highlights the danger of stepping out of your comfort zone.
I feel kinda bad watching a #movie about animated ducks that I'm hungry for real ducks but I'm sure the feeling will pass.
Lessons will be learned. Stars will make money doing voices in studios wearing their pajamas or nothing at all (Eg. Tom Hanks in those Toy Story movies).
