This is most certainly the kind of day which requires picking up a tub of good ice-cream on the way home from work.

This evening's viewing: Vincent Price, Robert (Count Yorga) Quarry, inept policemen, clockwork snakes, elaborate deaths in the desert & hidden Egyptian tombs, in a revisit to the delightfully daft Dr Phibes Rises Again.

book lovers!!

The tiny but award-winning independent book - @TheEdinburghBookshop - is moving! Only a couple of blocks, but to much bigger premises.

It's a lot more than we planned for & will take a lot of work to make it ready, so we'll be adding fundraisers to help, & you can see some architect designs & plans on the bookshop site now https://www.edinburghbookshop.com/newshop

Another reason we love David Tennant, as he tells transphobes to just "fuck off" https://boingboing.net/2024/05/07/david-tennant-tells-anti-trans-bigots-to-fck-off.html

Previously when I've been lucky enough to see a heron, they normally tend to stay stock-still, watching everything. This one decided to take a wee stroll https://www.flickr.com/photos/woolamaloo_gazette/53703566238/in/photostream/

Jennifer, to scifi
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

LordWoolamaloo,
@LordWoolamaloo@mastodon.scot avatar

@Jennifer @bookstodon Highly recommend Adrian Tchaikovsky, especially the Children of Time trilogy (human and other intelligent life evolving across millennia), or the Final Architecture series (with hints of Babylon 5 in there). He gives big, widescreen space opera but mixes action with more thoughful moments and good characters

Chatting with a visiting Kiwi author, Rachael King, in the bookshop today, she recognised me - turned out I had chaired her fellow Kiwi scribe at @edbookfest a few years ago, and she remembered me!

It really is a small planet (especially the literary part of it!)....

Massive traffic tailbacks on walk to work, arrogant, dangerous drivers deciding this makes it okay to charge through a green man crossing 3 cars scattering multiple pedestrian), or drive up one way roads illegally. Grrr
Wtf is it with entitled, dangerous drivers?

LordWoolamaloo, to Columbia
@LordWoolamaloo@mastodon.scot avatar

To hell with the free speech crushing bastards who run Columbia. A university should always be encouraging free expression in a democratic society. Instead they invited NYPD cops in riot gear to tackle their own students https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/30/new-york-police-columbia-university-student-protests

Every single Columbia person who agreed to this should be ashamed & leave education, as they're clearly unfit for any campus or the welfare of the students they are responsible for

Well, I suppose Yousaf can always claim that at least he lasted longer as a leader than Liz Truss (not a terribly high bar) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-68918781

LordWoolamaloo,
@LordWoolamaloo@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen Yep, I don't think he did anything as badly as some recent ones like Cameron or Truss, but he just seemed to stumble from one calamity to the next, rarely showing good judgement.

TBH the entire party has been making a mess the last couple of years - I'm struggling to think who I will vote for at next election, I suspect it is going to have to be less who do I want and more which of the useless scunners is least bad? Which isn't how it is meant to be...

It's nice Dan Poulter decided he had to leave the Tories because they were betraying the NHS & other public services https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68915259

However, I cannot but wonder why he ever thought that party cared about the NHS to begin with, or what took him so long

Happy birthday, Hubble.

Launched on this day way back in 1990 aboard the Shuttle Discovery, giving humanity a remarkable window on to the awe-inspiring wonders of our universe, allowing us to witness even the stellar nurseries, birthplace of the stars themselves.

How lovely to see wealthy, over-privileged royals rewarding one another with even more honours and titles for being, er, well, them. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-68882308

Just rubbing our faces in it now, aren't they?
