I spent waaay too much time on this 🙈:

A curated list of Mastodon accounts to follow if you're interested in , , 'ualisation, visual aspects of and etc. – 172 active accounts as of today!

Maybe a good way to get your feed going if you are

The latitude bounds of Great Britain, around the globe.

The green glow over land is the latitude of Edinburgh. It looks like it's in the middle, is that right?

Today I found out that Edinburgh is only just over half-way up this latitude range (52%).

Mind blown. I live in the Midlands! 😀

rotating animation of a globe. The northernmost and southernmost latitude lines of Great Britain are shown as bands, and a green light shows the latitude of Edinburgh. This light is only half way between the two bands.

@nickbearman I've been grading the first batch of student assignments in my updated Automating GIS Processes with & course. Was very happy to see that the course redesign seems to have worked out ☺️

Visualising output of the :qgis: subdivide algorithm.

This splits complex polygons into lots of simpler polygons. Spatial indexes are better with lots of smaller, simpler polygons.

This makes point/polygon intersection queries a lot faster.

I find subdivide gives invalid geometry in 's-Hertogenbosch (self-intersections).

So I split multiparts to single parts, then I buffer inwards by a tiny amount which fixes it.

This release is a bit easier to pronounce. 😁

QGIS 3.32 (Lima) brings a lot of changes to our beloved free and open source GIS. It is currently in packaging and should be available to Linux, Mac, and Windows users soon!

Probably one of the most awaited features in this release is the addition of native Point Cloud Processing in QGIS.

Have you been to a State of the Map, big or small, anytime in the last couple of years?

Where was it? What did you learn? What is the best reason (or reasons) to go?

Great enthusiasm for OpenStreetMap and open data coming across in this intro talk by Anne-Karoline Distel ( @BUnicycling ).
Her use case is recording detailed local history in Ireland! What's yours?

Hey

What's the best based app right now? Where do we stand with turn by turn instructions?

I there an open global dataset of OSM-related defaults and road regulations, e.g. maxspeed, driving side, parking regulations etc.?

Ideally hierarchical, i.e. per-country defaults which can be overridden for smaller administrative units.

Please boost within the community if you're also interested in this.

I really really really miss using QGIS for analysis as part of my day job. Any suggestions for hobby use?

⚠️ rgdal, rgeos, and maptools won’t be available on CRAN after October 2023. ⚠️

What are the consequences of this change? What do you need to do as a user and as a developer?
