Andy Burnham (still Mayor of Manchester) on social housing:

'One of the main reasons why the country has not built enough social homes for decades is because of the right-to-buy policy. Councils do not have an incentive to fund the building of new homes if they can be sold off cheaply & quickly. In the face of a desperate housing crisis, the existence of right to buy means we are in effect trying to refill a bath without being allowed to put the plug back in'!

Yup, that's about it!

The racialized efforts of housing reformers missed the big picture, says Carolyn Swope in a new Social Science History article. Poverty & marginalization not housing damaged the health of low income Black residents in early 20th century Washington DC. Open access.

Across Europe countries are suffering various housing crisis.... on the one hand it does suggest this is a wider problem than just a UK-specific policy problem.

However, on the other, this plausibly looks like a factor in the rise of the new/hard Right.

There are many aspects to these crises including loss of public housing but the treatment of housing as an asset class rather than homes for living in, is playing a major negative role.

The first meeting tonight intersecting urban growth with historic preservation was filled with angry uninformed people blurting out half baked rants. The meeting right after across town on the same topic was filled with insightful and curious people asking thoughtful questions about growth strategies. Guess which meeting had the NIMBYs? #Urbanism #Housing #Preservation #Petaluma

Housing isn't meant to be affordable
Michel Durand-Wood April 25, 2024

"...According to data from the US Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, indexed home prices in the US are 88.1% higher than they were in 2005, near the peak of the “housing bubble,” making it the second highest of the G7 countries. [Literature fans will recognize that as “foreshadowing.”]

...Turns out that a return to Victorian-era practices of locking out an entire class of people from land ownership tends to lead to civil unrest and revolt...

...We’re screwed if housing prices keep going up. We’re also screwed if they go down. That’s the trap..."

MAY DAY had a lot of meanings but back in the early 1900s, it was definitely a day to protest unfair increases against the working poor.
