This still needs lots of testing and polish, but:

now has a branch where it can register a phone number to your account via a helper app.

This means that you can send iMessages from your phone number (better than email for some reason) with or , without owning an iPhone.

Instead of adding stories, how about a feature that lets me disable receiving voice messages?

tyarosh,

@odddev That's nice to have, though I'm more inclined to an alternative approach — transcription that is available for all voice messages. If a voice is more convenient than text for a person at a time, let them use it. But if a text is more suitable for me at a time, I'd want to turn the voice into a text message. I believe this is the best for both the sending and receiving parties. I like that brings this approach to in 🙏

Why are some RCS chats not encrypted? #Android

mjgardner,
@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

@chimera Because #encryption is not a feature of #RCS. It is #Google’s proprietary extension only supported by recent versions of its Messages app: https://www.gstatic.com/messages/papers/messages_e2ee.pdf

But they do go on about #Apple’s lack of #iMessage interoperability: https://www.android.com/get-the-message

At least when you see the blue bubbles you know your messages are private.

(Well, not you specifically on #Android 😎)

I'd say go to Signal, but the UK is going after them, too.

Apple says it would remove iMessage and FaceTime in the UK rather than break end-to-end encryption https://9to5mac.com/2023/07/20/apple-imessage-facetime-remove-security-law/

Maybe the real issue is the size of these companies itself. It's no coincidence that and have public audits.

and , AKA Facebook and Apple can get away with avoiding them and it's that ability that's the issue.

It's fundamentally hard to trust a company that doesn't need to earn your trust.

I suspect that the eventual cross-platform solution to the incompatibility between and in the will just be everyone downloading an app like (which is a honeypot) or , much how everyone uses internationally.

The new stickers/Tapback functionality is interesting, but for my money the biggest improvement in Messages is the demotion of voice messages.

I have been accidentally triggering voice message recording for years, and have never deliberately sent one. The UI for this feature was terminally broken.

I do worry about the accessibility implications (there are surely people who rely on this and their lives just got harder), but this will be a quality of life improvement for me.
