I thought I had figured out a clever way to automatically add alt texts to images for InDesign using and the 'ImageDescription' field, but then I learned that said field is ASCII only.

The XMP data could support unicode, but working with that is apparently a total pain.

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

YES solved it.

If you need to programmatically add alt texts to image metadata with non ASCII letters for use in e.g. , use Exiftool. It works like a charm! https://exiftool.org/exiftool_pod.html

Simple as:
exiftool -s -AltTextAccessibility='Pig saysBröther give me some öats' edited-exif-ps.tif
Your alt text is now readable in as From XMP:Alt Text (Accessibilty) under Object Export Options in InDesign.

Does anyone know of a program or a website (that doesn't look like it's from the 1990s and sketchy) that can compress PDFs?

I've been trying to compress them myself and man, the images all turn out looking like modem downloadable quality. Super pixelated and jaggy artifacts. I've tried for 144 dpi thinking it'll be fine and it's the same issue.

To be clearer, I want to compress the file size as opposed to the images (I've already optimized/compressed them as best as I can to minimize the size).

For added details: the PDFs in question are exported from InDesign CS5, so I can't "pick" a custom resolution like I can in Affinity Publisher. I've tried Adobe Acrobat Pro (a very old version lol) and that...kinda didn't work either.

Any help appreciated, thank you!

(since it's comics lol)

Tiny things that wind me up.

The word "Indesign" isn't in Indesign's spelling dictionary as default. But 'InDesign' in camel-case is.

But the icon for (below) isn't in camel-case.

I wouldn't care but to me, this is somehow emblematic of 's complete lack of consistency across everything they do.

Making a try at a package for working with Markup Language files https://github.com/elipousson/idmlr

At present, it only unpacks an IDML file into the component XML files + reads those into a new idml-class list object. Hoping to take some inspiration from officer and add functions for extracting summary data frames + modifying attributes.

To change the page size in InDesign with the Page tool, it is better to use the upper left reference point. Translations in the inner coordinate spaces can lead to unexpected side effects.

app.activeDocument.masterSpreads[0].pages[0].resolve(AnchorPoint.TOP_LEFT_ANCHOR,CoordinateSpaces.INNER_COORDINATES)[0]; › 28.3464566929137.48.1889763764252

Consider how your game's cards will be held in hand. Some edges remain visible with diminishing visibility the further you get to the opposite edges. You can use this to your advantage by putting critical in-play icons and text close to the more visible corner. Endgame or conditional info can be discretely tucked into the other corner.

As a designer…

TFW you change something minor on your website, then realise that you will need to change that same minor thing across your entire brand.

And...

TFW you realise that InDesign is actually a really good app and you enjoy using it more than you should 😅

Hello Fediverse. Here's my and welcome to it.

I'm a late and living in the with my lovely and talented husband, Eric. We are both musicians and singers, though he makes a living at it while I have become a happy amateur, choosing instead to make my living tapping and cursoring about screens, mostly building signage to sell products I don't actually care much about. Still I love collaborating with creatives, making things and being good at what I do.

I'm a longtime fanboy, and expert and - mostly on the subject of sex, particularly between men. I often wish I'd pursued a career in sex research. Since I chose the arts, I instead created a podcast in which I could spout a few opinions and ask a ton of questions of people who understand sexuality in ways I don't, which is enormously fun.

Though it's been dormant a while, I produce The Heart of Jacks Podcast, and listening to it will tell you way more about me than any introduction. For example, I'm what's commonly considered an ethical slut, and I pursue a sort of mission to encourage people to find their way to authentic and joyful sexual expression that does what sex is fundamentally meant to do for humans: connect us meaningfully to ourselves and each other.

I operate a Mastodon instance that I will not name here and will not link to, because it is explicitly for the purpose of shamelessly sharing sensitive media. I intend to share thoughts, ideas and less-sensitive media here, and mainly find interesting interactions that require fewer CWs.

Things I believe:

Life is like most good games: a compelling combination of luck and skills.

"What seems to be coming at you is coming from you" —Jack Flanders

If you want it to be delicious, try adding butter.

Adult relationships require consistent, persistent effort.

"Every human being has a basic nature of goodness, which is undiluted and unconfused. That goodness contains tremendous gentleness and appreciation. As human beings we can make love. We can stroke someone with a gentle touch; we can kiss someone with gentle understanding. We can appreciate beauty. We can appreciate the best of this world. We can appreciate the yellowness of yellow, the redness of red, the greenness of green, the purpleness of purple. Our experience is real. And when we appreciate reality, it can actually work on us. We may have to get up in the morning after only a few hours’ sleep, but if we look out the window and see the sun shining, it can cheer us up. We can actually cure ourselves of depression if we recognize that the world we have is good." — Chögyam Trungpa
