Hey, #JeremyHunt... this is a real part of the #housingcriris - sub-standard housing - tinkering with #mortgage deposits to stoke house price #inflation will do nothing to address this problem...
We have a lot of rubbish housing that people (often renters) are being forced to live in, while you & your #landlord refuse to improve r maintain dwellings properly.
What we need is an enforceable landlords' duty to maintain alongside a better insulation scheme for owners.
Last september, my #landlord decided to double my #rent, effectively kicking me out of my #home of 11 years. I fell into #depression. Luckily my parents own a plot of #land, and thus, with my dads help, i set off to build a #tinyhouse without rent. After 4 months and several tens of thousands of dollars of materials (which i raised by selling old #videogame collectables), i am ready to move in.
#rents are (again) at record levels (according to Rightmove, at least) but interestingly around a quarter of all rental contracts are then concluded at a discount to the advertised rate....
This might be 'realism' by #landlords or suggest in some cases the rents advertised are not achievable - there are no renters prepared to pay these astronomical rents.
Given discounted rents have grown fro 16% - 23% in a year, may suggest #Landlord driven rent #inflation is peaking?
Only The City-State of #Hamburg [#Germany] made "purposeful vacancy" illegal and seizes vacant property, fixes them up and rents them out and will only return ownership to the #landlord that neglected them after the landlord paid all the fees, fines and costs of renovations.
Also said apartments are then only offered in a rent-controlled fashion...
How do the #Tories ensure the poor are further impoverished?
One simple mechanism: freeze local housing Allowance (benefit) rates.
The squeeze is on & of course, when you wonder about the implications, along with the pain it causes poor households, it also acts to transfer the nation's income from #workers & the vulnerable to the #landlord class... yup, more Tory #classwar!
According to the controller's office, 96% of those eviction filings were for non-payment of rent, 91% came with a 3-day notice and represented $186.5 million accumulated rent owed....
#Halifax#tenants of a #landlord who claims to own more than 100 #RentalUnits received a notice that their #leases are coming to an end. That strikes some as problematic—even if it’s entirely permissible by law.
A historic wave of tenant organizing is on the verge of winning renter protections that would be attached to federal loans—affecting 1 in 4 apartments. But Greystar, Blackstone, and AvalonBay are spending millions to block it....
"If the #landlord problem isn’t solved, millions of less wealthy Americans could be left out of the #GreenTransition — & will be stuck with higher #energy bills."
A start:
The Home-Owner Managing Energy Savings rebates (in #IRA). The maximum rebate doubles if the property serves low- and moderate-income Americans.
👀 #TIL Monopoly wasn't invented by the Parker Brothers, nor the man they gave it credit for. In 1904, Monopoly was originally called The Landlord's Game, and was invented by a radical woman. Elizabeth Magie's original game had not one, but two sets of rules to choose from.
One was called "Prosperity", where every player won money anytime another gained a property. And the game was won by everyone playing only when the person with the least doubled their resources. A game of collaboration and social good.
The second set of rules was called "Monopoly", where players succeeded by taking properties and rent from those with less luck rolling the dice. The winner was the person who used their power to eliminate everyone else.
Magie's mission was to teach us how different we feel when playing Prosperity vs Monopoly, hoping that it would one day change national policies.
When the Parker Bros adopted the game, they erased the "Prosperity" rules and celebrated "Monopoly". #ElizabethMagie#Monopoly#Landlord
